Is China's Olympics Vacation Affecting Commodities Markets? [View article]
Goldman now out with a report confirming this. I know Goldman is a gajillion times more credible than me...but why couldn't people just give me a little benefit of the doubt and the mockery?! I just want some love!
AMSC has very very shady financial history. Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole with a skunk tied to the end. Careful, just because a technology "sounds" innovative doesn't mean it, or the company, will make you money.
Thanks TinyTim! I've worked a little with modernizing power transformers but nothing compares to your years of industry experience! Thanks for the insights! do you have any transmisson & distribution websites or magazines that you use to keep on top of the industry? I'd love to gget my hands on those
Actually...this might be a crazy idea but... how about GE? More and more of their portfolio is geared towards global industrial and infrastructure needs. They have so many businesses that they're almost like a ETF. GE's finance arm took down the rest of the company, the good infrastructure parts of the company. But for those who are looking for the recovery and best long-term gain in the financials, why not GE- with a finance division AND great infrastructure?
Weird idea not being mentioned...but love to hear pros and cons....

Everyone: This article isn't actual research, just to get some discussion going other than the "speculators" theme by the media. I think it's important to consider different possibilities, as the less or least talked about has a knack for biting us investors in the *ahem*
John Egan: My dad manufacturers industrial-type hardware and imports them for sale here in the U.S. He uses a lot of steel, zinc, nickel, and copper.
Captain Johann: Yes, U.S. and E.U. still uses steel, but I think with the demise of the U.S. auto and housing industries, and with manufacturing at lows we haven't seen for a long time, industrial exports are the ones holding up U.S. steel demand...and I would group that in with global demand (China included) rather than U.S. demand.

yes. U.S. powergrid upgrade cycle and BRIC countries powergrid buildout the biggest investing opportunity no one is talking about = opportunity.
"ABB posted record orders of $11 billion in the quarter. Electricity providers in North America and Europe are modernizing plants, and China aims to spend almost $150 billion over five years to bolster its network after six years of blackouts." ~ABB Profit Climbs 34%, Driven by Power Grid Spending (Update2)

or, all the to-be foreclosed homes are foreclosed, and all those in the same neighborhood and get their housing values destroyed by the foreclosed homes...these folks get foreclosed themselves. then maybe we kick out half the country onto the streets/tents/teepees, and find ourselvs a bottom.

mark, flatman, I don't even try to think that far. People are like, Paulson used to run GS! How'd he suddenly turn dumb. No dumb or smart about it...the job description for the secretary of Treasury is just that, repeat the script. Easiest job Paulson ever had! No matter what question the press asks, they give the same answer! Behind the scenes, sure he's doing stuff. On air, repeat: "Economy's strong, dollar's strong, U.S. is strong. Hoo-ah"

Transocean's New Contract an Antidote to Oil's Volatility [View article]
Paulk8756, why would you think the explorers are "speculating" on the long side of oil? The rest of the business world actually DON'T think like traders and hedge funds where everything is a diceroll at the craps table. Accumulating more resources, which includes drilling for oil as well as building infrastructure for people to use, is as much a speculation as it is to say the billions and billions of people who will be using these resources won't exist. Unless the human race become infertile, this is the greatest development boom this earth has ever seen...and you can sit there and just complain how it will all be over, and it will be, but by that time the world will be changed dramatically, and ridiculous wealth created along the way.
Everyday the news keeps wanting to tell people this global development story is over, and you should stay away and let other people make the money off of it, not you. I just remember this family story. My great grandfather, in the 20's, bought and sold (i.e. traded) rice in Taiwan...then some empty thirdworld island. He retired before he was 40 yrs old, owning literally MOUNTAINS our family still has today. That was just a tiny island, albeit it successful now as the leading chip manufacturer in the world. But still, I want to own MOUNTAINS...and the way to getting it is riding this wave...
