Blockbuster's New Paradigm and Its Impact On Competitors
I used to work at Blockbuster as a District Manager and can tell you from experience that Blockbuster has tried to sell retail electronics in the past. The stores have actually carried DVD Players, Electronic Accessories (cables, DVDR’s, CDR’s, remote controls, etc…), licensed retail product based on movie characters, satellite systems, not to mention game systems and game hardware.

The reason that none of the above listed items are still sold in any stores (other than the dwindling number of Game Rush units, which still sell game systems and hardware) is that customers can get a better assortment and much better pricing at stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, and Wal-Mart. While consumers may be willing to overspend a few dollars on high priced confection items in exchange for the convenience of not having to drive elsewhere after renting; it is a different story when it comes to higher ticket retail items.

In the past, every attempt to expand the retail assortment has resulted in low turns and the majority of the product eventually being marked down and sold at a loss. I can still remember some of the stores in my district having the same ten or twelve DVD players sitting on display for over a year when I worked there.
In my experience Blockbuster's New Paradigm seems a lot like a repackaged version of Blockbuster's Old Paradigm.
