  • My Mad Method Meets My Wife's IRA - January 2013 [View article]
The author is talking about contributing $1,500 to his IRA twice a year, it doesn't sound to me like the overall balance would be large enough to generate any UBTI of any conseqence - but that is a guess on my part. Your point is well taken however. All the best.

  • Expect Continued Growth From Magellan Midstream Partners [View article]
As long as MMP continues to invest in capital assets, the depreciation shield will be in place for a long time to come, and the partnership seems to spend billions a year in capex.

MMP has been a fantastic performing investment for my portfolio. The increasing distributions each year have been very effective in keeping the unit price going up up up. So while the yield looks modest, you have to factor in the unit price increase and the total return has been super.

Had you sold all of your units in 2012, you would have been able to take as a deduction on your return the passive losses that have been accumulating all these years. Instead, until you actually exit your complete ownership in the partnership, those passive losses are suspended. Though I am sure you and your tax advisor already knew that.

  • Attempting To Mimic The Yale Endowment Portfolio Using ETFs [View article]
It is impossible for anyone person to earn the same returns as the Yale Endowment as it is a not for profit and pays zero in income / capital gains / Obamacare taxes. But interesting article, thank you for writing it.

Cheap natural gas as a feedstock is also paying off with lower operating costs. As VLO continues to upgrade their refineries the cost advantage will only get better.

If your MLP holdings are all in IRAs there is no need to deal with K1s, these are tax deferred accounts. If you hold in a taxable account, many MLPs send out a tax package with the K1 that shows you where each line should be reported and on what forms. Its not that tough.

I agree with you on Lodi, that was not the best move. I will have to give the GP deal some thought. Before that deal closed, the GP was trading at a discount to BPL - which is how I ended up with my BPL units, I seem to recall it was $4-5 / share discount at the time.

Anyways, thank you for taking the time to write the article.

Buckeye's pipelines are refined product pipelines not crude oil pipelines. The crude in the Eagle Ford for instance gets transported to the Gulf Coast refineries and then gets taken away via other pipelines, ship etc. Buckeye's pipelines connect to other refined product pipelines and then distribute in their markets to terminals.

Likewise product comes into the US at Perth Amboy, gets stored and taken away by BPL's pipelines and others, truck /rail etc.

One question for you, you say they have a history of "overpaying" for assets. The BP deal and Borco deal seem to be generating decent cash flow, the only one that has been problematic recently is the Lodi gas writedown. Other than Lodi how do you support the statement that they overpay?

  • Buy Caterpillar: News Is Just Noise [View article]
I have to question the company's due diligence on this acquisition, something doesn't smell right here. The fact that they wrote off 100% is also interesting, in effect they flushed shareholder money down the toilet - this needs to be investigated and reported on. What an embarrassment.

  • Can You Retire With A $1,000,000 Portfolio? [View article]
Retirement savings is a massive problem in this country. The reality is that (based on some data from Fidelity that was published recently) the average 401k savings is about $65,000 which is pathetic. Especially since I know may people that have 401k balances of over $1m which means that there are many people out there with essentially nothing saved.

To make matters worse, many folks have had to borrow from their 401k which at least in my personal view is one of the worst things you can do.

We would be foolish to think that social security will provide for more than a dog food diet type of life, or cat food if you prefer. My rule of thumb is 15% of your gross needs to be saved between tax deferred accounts and taxable. If you are lucky to have some form of pension, that is gravy on the top

The only way to achieve this type of savings is to "pay" yourself (meaning your 401k, Roth, IRA etc) and taxable brokerage accounts first before you spend a dime. Learn to live on your cash flow after savings, otherwise you will be eating cat food / dog food in retirement or get to like the words "Welcome to Walmart" because you will be working your entire lifetime.

  • 2 Great Dividend Stocks To Replace The Risky mREIT Sector Stocks [View article]
I went to see if any of the analyst reports from my on line broker covered these, they didn't really, just generic reports. Then I went and pulled the 2011 10-K for KFN. This is not an easy read for a Sunday night, I will print it off and BKCC's 10k and take a read during the week. These are complex businesses / securities, much more complex than mReits with the added bit that they are associated with KKR and Blackrock and that adds to the risk profile potentially due to related party transactions.

The 2012 10k for each should be coming out in the next month or so. Given the complexity of these two, I will read up now, but wait until I can digest those reports before allocating capital to them.

  • Wal-Mart And Costco Compared [View article]
I guess that is the $60,000 question, even if they did, I wouldn't shop there. Same reason I rarely if ever go to Walmart, I don't care for their merchandise, how it is presented, and the folks that work there have been unhelpful and rude the few times I have gone to Walmart.
