  • Kinder Morgan: Why Barron's Is Wrong Regarding The CO2 Segment [View article]
So Hedgeye / Barrons were wrong on LINE, no doubt they are wrong on KMP. The lack of due diligence before publishing these hit pieces is just incredible, journalistic incompetence at best.

  • Some Good Tax News For Roth IRA Investors [View article]
Our 15 year old had her first "paying" job this summer as a lifeguard at the community pool. I made a deal with her to get her interested in actually working a job rather than sleeping the summer away and also starting to get her thinking about investing. I had her 1) Direct deposit her pay check so she never saw a check, only a stub and 2) Promised her that I would match her earnings dollar for dollar upto the Roth IRA contribution limit via a gift.

She held up her end of the deal and used her babysitting money for spending money and has 100% of her after tax income in the bank, and I established the Roth IRA for her and she chose the investments (after Dad screened them of course, blue chip stuff).

Next Spring when she gets her income tax refund, that too will be deposited into savings. Once she has say $10,000 in savings, she will get a taxable brokerage account in addition to her Roth.

I imagine we will keep this deal going until she graduates college, by the time she is ready to retire, I no doubt will be long gone, but she will be thanking me for my thoughtful and generous actions while she was young. We intend to do the same for our two other children.

  • 13.1% Distribution Linn Energy Had A Good Q3, But It May Be In Trouble If Oil Prices Don't Rise. Sell? [View article]
So the attack begins again on Linn. Frankly, as long as distibutions are not going south, I am happy to sit and collect. I am not alarmist on the company's strategy and direction. It is easy to be critical as many others have been. but Linn delivers over and over again. That to me means that management has cred and knows what it is doing. I will stick with Linn.

  • Continue To Avoid Linn Energy [View article]
Another hit piece by the shorts, they never stop. I find it amusing the author has few to no facts to present on "expectations" or pretty much anything else.

  • Linn Energy Is Ready To Bounce Back [View article]
From reading this article, it is clear who ever wrote it knows very little about LINE and didn't do a complete review of existing public SEC filings.

At least you are honest in disclosing your short position. Seems like a lot of work for effectively a drive by shooting.

  • Get MLP Yield Without The Tax Hassles [View article]
"Income from MLPs is taxable in retirement accounts if the income exceeds $1000. Also, cash distributions from MLPs are treated differently for tax purposes in standard accounts. Investors in MLPs have to file Schedule K-1, which is sent later than 1099 forms. In some cases, investors receive Schedule K-1 after April 15, forcing them to file for an extension. Furthermore, an MLP's cash distributions are taxed at ordinary income rates, rather than the 15% dividend rate"

I don't think you understand what you are writing about. Your statement that Income from MLPs over $1,000 is taxable in retirement accounts is false. UBTI income over $1,000 is taxable in retirement accounts, many MLPs don't generate much if any UBTI.

Investors don't have to file form K1 - they "receive" a form K1 which is easily handled by any of the major tax prep packages - most of the MLPs send with their tax packages illustrative forms which show where to report each line of the K1 in your tax returns, not a big deal.

Your statement that MLP cash distributions are taxed as ordinary income is misleading as well. Once your basis in the partnership is reduced to zero by receiving distributions any distributions received are taxed as ordinary income - however, you are not taxed on distributions before then but rather pay tax on your share of the partnership's income - if there is any. Depreciation provides many MLPs with a significant tax shield such that in many cases income taxes are for the most part deferred.

Before making irresponsible statements like you have made, you should do some research or not make the statements at all. By publishing false statements, you undermine everything else you publish.

  • Kinder Morgan: Just Cleared Major Hurdle On Way To Merger Vote [View article]
Rich Kinder controls the partnership(s) / company and there is no doubt that this deal is getting done, the shareholder vote is already over, because if Rich Kinder votes for it (which he will) then no one can block it.

I have some sympathy for those who as part of their estate plan invested in KMP with the intent to hold until death so that taxes would never get paid on the distributions received during their lifetime, but, stuff happens. And the rest of the unit holders are going to benefit, so pay your tax bill and enjoy the returns going forward.

  • Retirement Strategy: How Dividend Income Grows To Staggering Levels By Reinvesting And Compounding [View article]
Actually, our oldest child who has been working since she was 14 has a small but modest portfolio that generates dividends inside a Roth IRA. She has a part time job and contributes 100% of her earned income into the Roth, it is only a few thousand a year, but in an other 47 years when she retires, it is going to be a nice pile of cash. She uses her babysitting money for spending and is fairly tight with her cash.
