  • The WSJ finds anecdotal evidence that restaurants and bars have been converting much of their staff to part-time from full time so that they don't have to provide health insurance as mandated by the Affordable Care Act. Companies in the sector have been adding 50,000 jobs a month since since April, although the average work week for staff has risen slightly to 25.6 hours this year from 25.5 hours in 2012. [View news story]

  • Latest blow to Paula Deen, who was dropped like a hot potato by various employers and sponsors throughout the week (I, II, III) comes from Random House. Until Friday, the one bright spot of the chef's week was the #1 spot on Amazon's (AMZN) best-seller list taken by pre-orders for her newest book, due in October. But Random House, the publisher, has now backed away from publishing the book and cancelled the rest of its contract with Deen. Sears, J.C. Penney, K-mart, Walmart and Target all had announced they would stop selling Deen-branded products, including books. Also yesterday Novo Nordisk (NVO) did finally drop her as a spokesperson.

  • Fisker Automotive, the struggling government-backed hybrid sports car maker, terminates 75% of its staff in what sources said was a last-ditch effort to conserve cash and stave off a potential bankruptcy filing. The company, which raised $1.2B from investors and tapped nearly $200M in government loans, has only around $30M in cash remaining. About 160 workers were fired at a Friday morning meeting at its Anaheim, Calif., headquarters, and were told that the company couldn't afford to give them severance payments. [View news story]

  • By a 75-24 margin, the Senate has passed a non-binding vote of approval for a bill allowing states to collect sales taxes from online retailers with $1M+  in annual sales and no presence within a given state's borders. The margin of victory suggests a filibuster shouldn't be a problem when a binding vote is made. Amazon (AMZN) and eBay (EBAY) have already begun collecting in a number of large states, and many investors have already assumed collections will expand in time. (previous[View news story]
I just learned today that the US Embassy in Bagdad has 10,000 - that's ten thousand ! employees. A little sales tax increase is nothing compared to what the Feds need to run their show !! A long as all levels of government can get their hands on other peoples money they will continue to grow. Just remember somebody voted these guys and gals into office - maybe you and me ?!?!

  • The White House is ratcheting up the rhetoric ahead of the President's annual State of the Union address, warning that automatic government spending cuts due to hit March 1 - unless Congress acts to prevent them - are going bite deeply into programs affecting many Americans. The list runs the standard gamut of essentials, including: A reduction in force of about 1,000 law enforcement agents; 2,100 fewer food safety inspections; and the loss of nutrition and food benefits for approximately 600K women and children. [View news story]

  • The use of non-conventional drilling techniques in places like North Dakota and Texas has created an explosion in U.S. oil production, to the point where it's expected to surpass Saudi Arabia in crude production by 2020. The government now predicts the U.S. industry could pump 14% more oil this year alone, rising to 7.3M bpd in 2013. That's 300K more than its December forecast, and 900K bpd more than what was produced in 2012. [View news story]
OK- how about reducing the pumping rate when prices are low and increasing the rate when prices are high - it's what our ' friends ' in the middle east do !!!

We SHOULD NOT export/sell all of this new found natural gas/oil. We should pay oil industry to explore/develop resources on some % of Federal lands and then place these gas/oil fields in a new type of reserve - a 'developed in place' oil/gas reserve. This would be a great insurance policy for the future of the U.S.

  • The Natural Gas Export Issue: Rumblings In Washington [View article]

We need to create a strategic energy reserve by drilling and developing every reasonable oil & gas field we can find and then just holding the oil/gas in the ground until WE need it. If we did this for a few years we could then tell OPEC & friends to take their oil and drink it !

  • You can't fight the forces of demographics: In almost every western country, the peak in real estate prices has coincided very closely with the peak in dependency ratios - the proportion of working age population relative to older folks. In other words, it doesn't bode well for a country's standard of living when pensioners start to outnumber workers. [View news story]
How about when the % of population that pay no income tax and even receive ' negative income tax ' , that is earned income tax credit, is a greater and greater % ??

  • U.S. policymakers are in the "anti-capitalism business" and prolonging symptoms of the recession, says Jim Grant. Their actions are "all wrong" and "have nothing to do" with what the founders of the Fed intended, Grant adds, warning of the unintended consequences. (video)  [View news story]
I have seen it reported that each week for the past 20 weeks the previous week's initial unemployment # is always adjusted upward just enough to show that the current week's initial # is a decrease !?

Anybody know anything about this ?
