  • Fisker Automotive, the struggling government-backed hybrid sports car maker, terminates 75% of its staff in what sources said was a last-ditch effort to conserve cash and stave off a potential bankruptcy filing. The company, which raised $1.2B from investors and tapped nearly $200M in government loans, has only around $30M in cash remaining. About 160 workers were fired at a Friday morning meeting at its Anaheim, Calif., headquarters, and were told that the company couldn't afford to give them severance payments. [View news story]

  • Boeing (BA) CEO James McNerney on the U.S. government suit claiming the company's decision to build its 787 Dreamliner plant in South Carolina was retaliation against the unionized workforce in Washington state: a "fundamental assault on the capitalist principles that have sustained America's competitiveness."  [View news story]
The first revolution was about ' taxation without representation '. Now we have ' government by the unelected '. All of the various parts of the constitution and various court decisions regarding how government should work and limiting is powers DO NOT APPLY to the unelected departments, etc. now in charge in Washington. The recent actions of the NLRB are a perfect example.

  • If Obama really wants to weed out regulations that are "just plain dumb," he might want to start with a new rule designed to prevent Gulf-style oil spills... at dairy farms. The EPA just began subjecting dairy producers to a 1970 spill prevention act, determining that milk contains "a percentage of animal fat, which is a non-petroleum oil."  [View news story]

  • U.S. policymakers are in the "anti-capitalism business" and prolonging symptoms of the recession, says Jim Grant. Their actions are "all wrong" and "have nothing to do" with what the founders of the Fed intended, Grant adds, warning of the unintended consequences. (video)  [View news story]
I have seen it reported that each week for the past 20 weeks the previous week's initial unemployment # is always adjusted upward just enough to show that the current week's initial # is a decrease !?

Anybody know anything about this ?

  • Latest blow to Paula Deen, who was dropped like a hot potato by various employers and sponsors throughout the week (I, II, III) comes from Random House. Until Friday, the one bright spot of the chef's week was the #1 spot on Amazon's (AMZN) best-seller list taken by pre-orders for her newest book, due in October. But Random House, the publisher, has now backed away from publishing the book and cancelled the rest of its contract with Deen. Sears, J.C. Penney, K-mart, Walmart and Target all had announced they would stop selling Deen-branded products, including books. Also yesterday Novo Nordisk (NVO) did finally drop her as a spokesperson.

  • The Obama administration will ask Congress to raise the nation's borrowing limit by another $1.2T this week, marking the third and final increase from a deal reached over summer. Treasury officials note the increase is necessary because the government will approach within $100B of its current limit by Friday.  [View news story]
We should demand that congress tie term limits for themselves to increasing debt limit ??!!!

  • "The president is missing," Paul Krugman writes - or at least his version of what Obama should be: "the inspirational figure his supporters thought they elected." By "caving in so completely" on the "terrible" budget deal, Obama "set a baseline for even bigger concessions over the next few months."  [View news story]
The only thing that Obama actually did in the way of 'work' was as a community organizer. If you have watched one in action you would see that they don't really DO anything - they get everyone else to do whatever ! The fact that he did not take into account is that Washington is NOT a community of like minded people but a big mess of individuals looking out for themselves and only themselves.

He is trying to herd cats !!!

  • Reluctant to be seen as holding up a tax break for American workers, House Republican leaders say they will put forward a new proposal to extend the payroll tax cut, giving up for now on their earlier requirement that it must be paid for. Speaker Boehner and the others say their backup plan could come for a vote as soon as this week, before the tax break expires Feb. 29.  [View news story]
How about describing this thing as what it really is - a reduction in contributions to social security NOT a reduction to income tax collections - you are collecting your social security EARLY - good luck when you retire !!

  • Obama can jawbone corporate executives all he wants to try to persuade them to boost hiring, but they're not likely to "get in the game" until they're convinced he's really on their side. In any case, investors have been more prone to reward companies for holding back on pretty much everything, including workers.  [View news story]
All who voted for him are getting a gradute level education in what a community organizer is and does !!!!! The rest of us could see through him from the beginning. My dad had a name for such people - " a stuffed shirt " .

  • Why Higher Deficits Don't Mean Higher Income Tax Rates [View article]
For the 20+ years after the war the US economy was very heavy in manufacturing - we were producing hard assets that were sold both here and around the would (exports) ! Can't say the same for today - we seem to be producing problems ( mortgage backed securities ) and selling them around the would !

  • The White House is ratcheting up the rhetoric ahead of the President's annual State of the Union address, warning that automatic government spending cuts due to hit March 1 - unless Congress acts to prevent them - are going bite deeply into programs affecting many Americans. The list runs the standard gamut of essentials, including: A reduction in force of about 1,000 law enforcement agents; 2,100 fewer food safety inspections; and the loss of nutrition and food benefits for approximately 600K women and children. [View news story]

  • The use of non-conventional drilling techniques in places like North Dakota and Texas has created an explosion in U.S. oil production, to the point where it's expected to surpass Saudi Arabia in crude production by 2020. The government now predicts the U.S. industry could pump 14% more oil this year alone, rising to 7.3M bpd in 2013. That's 300K more than its December forecast, and 900K bpd more than what was produced in 2012. [View news story]
OK- how about reducing the pumping rate when prices are low and increasing the rate when prices are high - it's what our ' friends ' in the middle east do !!!
