  • Qualcomm: Can Jana Partners Get Us The Split? [View article]
A split would be the worst thing the company could do for its long term success.
Let Jana sell their stake rather than pushing the destruction of the company.

  • Learning From The Masters: Market Meltdown Edition [View article]
The meltdown caught me short of cash in my IRA. So in order to capitalize on this rare opportunity, I sold my remaining positions in GE (I had sold the bulk of it when they froze the dividend) and LEG (low DG). I made a good profit on them though not as much as I would have if I had sold them a week earlier. Used the proceeds to add to my VTR and GILD positions, as well as starting a position on PFF.

Darn! Now you had to go and tell everyone what a great company OHI is. Hopefully they won't listen and I can continue building my OHI position. :-)

  • 12 Attractive Fast-Growing Dividend Growth Stocks For High Total Return [View article]
    Excellent article Chuck!

As a DGI'er I would not normally invest in companies like GILD. However, I do reserves some funds for "play". I recently built a position on GILD because it a great company and is so underpriced. Looking forward to seeing it grow.

  • The dream of a McWhopper is proposed and then rejected [View news story]
True, taste buds differ, but the crispness in the lettuce, the onion and the slice of tomato make the 1/4 pounder a distant second. Why can't McDonald do the same rather than the crap they use?

  • General Electric: Is It Time To Jump On Board? [View article]
    "Shareholder-Friendly Management Team"

    Are you kidding?

    They've frozen the dividend.

Since they are selling the most profitable segment, they've embarked on a massive stock buyback so their EPS don't take a big hit as a result (ie. massive financial engineering).

The stock holders are getting zip from the spinoffs and sales.

Immelt and the Board should be booted out.

Other than that, GE could be a great company.

    Used to be long GE
and may step back in under the right circumstances (dividend thaw, Immelt and the Board go away,...).

  • McWhopper Would Be Catastrophic For McDonald's [View article]
Do a taste and quality of ingredients test between MCD's 1/4 pounder and BK's Whopper. Incredible difference!

  • The dream of a McWhopper is proposed and then rejected [View news story]
I had an opportunity (if you want to call it that) to eat a MCD 1/4 pounder one day, followed by a BK Whopper the next day. The difference in taste and quality of ingredients was outstanding. As a MCD stock holder, I am sorry to say that the Whopper is infinitely superior to the 1/4 pounder.

  • McDonald's Needs To Step Out Of Its Golden Arch And Open Up New Sales Channels [View article]
I had occasion to eat a McD 1/4 pounder one day, and follow it up with a BK Whopper the following day. What an incredible difference! The Whopper beats the 1/4 pounder by a large stretch.

"What I really mean with that question is why did all these things come to a head last week? "

Simple answer: Computerized trading algorithms issuing sell orders indiscriminately all over the market.

"With that said, it is not Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG), Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT), or AT&T (NYSE:T) that is getting crushed today, but rather those high beta, top-performers."

Precisely how high beta stocks are supposed to behave.

  • The Tribble With Telcos - Short Verizon [View article]

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I worked at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, from 1966 to 1976. Left before the Justice Department forced breakup of the Bell System. While at Bell Labs, I personally met and worked with some of the smartest people ever. To name but a few: Bill Shockley, who was retired but still consulting at Bell Labs. Richard Hamming, who gave us error detection and correction in digital communications. Dennis Ritchie & Ken Thompson, who gave us Unix. Arno Penzias, who gave us the first evidence of the Big Bang (cosmic background radiation). Many others come to mind.

    Ahh, those where the days.

Who knows what the world would be like today if the government had left things alone.
