While Gartman is Goldless, I Still Itch for Commodities
RYFOX looks like an excellent "one stop" approach to "alternative"... approaches. I have RYMFX which is the Trader Vic Sperandeo approach to managed futures in commodities and financials (note, bonds, forex). That's 50% of what's in RYFOX as you know. RYFOX gives the manager some greater flexibility in the commodity and forex area, and since they both started up in March at about the time of the gold peak, RYFOX has outperformed RYMFX.

I'd say you ARE smart in your choice! ;)

Bob Moriarty: Gold is Safe Haven for Looming Crash
Both CEF and ASA are, for US investors, "passive foreign investment companies" (PFIC) and require one to make formal "elections" on a special form to the IRS of one of several choices of how to be taxed. All of the choices are, in my opinion, unfavorable compared to normal US investment taxation. Making no formal election also has adverse results.

In my opinion, and I am only a private investors and NOT an attorney nor an accountant, it would be preferable for most US investors to own CEF and ASA only in tax-deferred retirement fundds such as IRAs, 401Ks, etc.

Here is an explanation of the tax treatment of PFICs which ASA has published at its website:

Why Gold Is the New Currency
      CLH,

In the very long run you are absolutely correct. If you are under 40 years of age, just buy the S&P500 and maybe an EAFE index fund and forget about it. Older than that you just can't risk losing 50% of your money in 1-2 years as happened to many people from 2000-2002. You don't have enough years left to come back.

Gold only makes sense in a gold bull market, which we're currently in and will be in for another decade.

I'm a long term gold bull too. Ditto for cobalt, copper, silver, cotton, lean hogs, and all the rest of the commodities. However this is due to increased demand since 1998 and the rundown of the ability to deliver enough supply due to falling prices from 1980-1998/2003. This is the approximately 27 year up and 27 year down supply demand cycle.

Volcker got the praise for defeating inflation in 1980 (at the end of the up cycle) and Greenspan and Bernanke get the blame for causing it since 2000 (at the beginning of the up cycle), but in point of fact they are only very marginal players in total world supply and demand.

Safe Haven Investments Amid a Global Crisis
      TERN,

I rarely discuss politics, but I think the Iran war talk is totally misinformed. Iran is being pressured to give up the centrifuges and other uranium enrichment procedures that could lead to weapons grade uranium. This same pressure was also applied to Libya and to North Korea with considerable success. It's a one form of public persuasion or psychological warfare, the stick part of carrot and stick diplomacy which is on-going on many fronts. We all hope for many reasons that it is a successful diplomatic effort. In any case there will be no war. But there are confused and frightened people who don't know what's going on.

mc²: I've been saying the same thing for ten years, namely that commodities will be going up on a trend basis for the next 15-20 years. They do and will, however, have pullbacks to be bought if one missed the lows or earlier pullbacks. So Mark's repetition is a good and wise thing.

Good review! Here's another reason why platinum is a good long term metal to own. Maybe cobalt as well? I know a lot of cobalt comes from Congo/Zaire. Where else?

Lots of mid sized golds will be buying the smaller fish during the mini-bear of the next year or so. They know that when gold goes above $1500 per tr oz everyone's aunt Nelly will be buying the pennies and other laggards, so they'd better do it while gold is down

American Express Calls Investment Banks' Bluff
I think many do not know that American Express classic card holders MUST pay their charges each month, and do. They have been trying to convince me after over 40 years with them to sign up for one of their "defaultable"... credit charge cards so I can spend hundreds of dollars of interest in addition to normal merchants' charges they get. They are apparently not clear on the concept of their own cards and clients.

I knew they must be hurting because I am recently getting at least five emails and three post mailings a day for some new schemes I don't want or need.

Some friends tell me Amexco are cutting monthly charge limits on some of their BIG business clients who have always paid on time. It looks like we'll all have to start getting cash at the bank like in the olde dayz and carry a Glock! jeeeeeziz...

Most banks have a safe room and can even escrow exchanges like that. They do it for jewelry examinations and sales. That might be safer than a parking lot.

      enviro111:

Good point about selling options on GLD. As you clearly know, this is how long term gold owners cover their expenses and generate some income on their gold. I made a good bit of money during the long bear market selling call options to the ever hopeful. The GLD listing makes it much easier to do that these days, as you are doing.

Using Gold to Protect a Portfolio
      ussmls7,

He may have meant had you bought gold at the $850 high in 1980. He wrote this article and it appeared at his own web site a few weeks ago. Gold was selling as low as 860 basis nearest futures on June 12, so 860/850 was a bit over 1% higher than the high in 1980.

I don't personally like paper gold either except for short term speculation/hedging.
