Malkiel, GLD is a "market" where one can buy or sell small or large amounts of gold exposure. Most people do not want to buy a gold trading company which may or may not trade sucessfully. They want to be "indexed" to the cash gold price. There are public commodity trading pools available if you want someone to do that for you.
