  • Mac vs. PC vs. Gold [View article]
I think you meant "for the truly masochistic", not "for the truly sadistic".

  • iPhone vs. Netbook: Which Will Be the Biggest Gaming Machine?  [View article]
Penguin, you seem to be saying that if a company takes existing technology and makes it tremendously more usable and useful for consumers that that doesn't count as innovation, only as "marketing". I disagree. It doesn't matter to me whether my Palm Treo had the same *potential* capabilities on paper as the iPhone (it doesn't, but just for the sake of argument). The point is I didn't or couldn't use them. The iPhone doesn't just "polish pre-existing technology": it actually makes it usable.

That's not marketing: that is technological genius and innovation.

As to marketing, have you ever watched someone demo their iPhone to someone else? The iPhone sells itself.

    "Steve Jobs' marketing genius"?

Once again, the subtle insinuation that this is mostly about marketing. It is not. It is mostly about a phenomenally good product that is miles ahead of its competitors, and a phenomenally good system for sales and distribution of music, video, and apps -- that is also miles ahead of its competitors.

Apple has great marketing. It also has fantastic products. If you don't get that the former is useless without the latter you are missing the point of the iPhone (and the iPod) success.

  • Why It's Time to Buy Google, Apple [View article]
iPhone apps are not "open source", at least not necessarily. "Open source" means their source code is available for view and modification by other developers. I don't know of any iPhone apps that are open source, though some may be. The point is that open source has nothing in particular to do with Apple's App Store distribution model (which as a user I *love*, btw).

  • Apple Pushes Its Envelope Further Than Ever [View article]
I'm an Apple stockholder and longtime fan, and I regularly use Keynote. Still, I have to admit I don't understand how using Keynote for your presentation "saved your butt" and using Powerpoint would have made you "miss the point". They're both very easy to use, very capable programs. To my mind the main differences are that:

    - Powerpoint has more features, which makes it more complicated
    - Powerpoint has uglier templates and clunkier transitions

Why you wouldn't be able to make a quick presentation in Powerpoint, though, is beyond me.

  • Apple's AT&T Deal Is Costly [View article]
This is hilarious: Apple comes out of nowhere to best the phone manufacturers at their own game, making a huge profit, with heaven knows what else up their sleeve, and this writer thinks it's a problem.

As a happy Apple stockholder, Mac user, iPhone owner, all I can say is: if this is a problem, I could use more problems like it! :-)

  • AT&T's "Edge" Network Shatters iPhone Mobile Web Expectations [View article]
I have to agree with the other two comments: EDGE isn't great but it's certainly usable and very useful. I've been amazed, actually, that I can download and watch YouTube videos over EDGE and it's not too slow.

WiFi, on the other hand, is terrific on the iPhone. I have found myself many times reaching for my iPhone instead of bothering to fire up the laptop. This happens much more with the iPhone than with my last phone (a Treo 680).

Network speed is one issue, and I'll probably buy a 3G iPhone as soon as it's available. But don't make the mistake of discounting the iPhone's incredible ease-of-use, which makes checking stocks and weather, for example, the kind of quick task it should have been a long time ago.

And this is just the 1.0 device! Better than my 6th gen Treo!
