CLWR is a bastard towards their customers, but mobile broadband rocks and they are the only provider in my area.
anything that offers an alternative to both broadband cable and cell phones is good by me. you can do phone calls over CLWR networks today, if you don't mind carrying a laptop with skype on it around all the time.
as with everything on the internets, a closed option will be met with an open coalition of competition, usually spearheaded by google
it doesn't seem likely that google will choose the closed route with mapping information. instead, they'll make the information easily searchable and sell ads for it

my gut tells me they are optimistic software types accustomed to solving involved but fundamentally simple problems that be broken into bits and fixed through being organized and a little bit creative. this in no way prepares them to address energy questions, which are constrained by fundamental laws of physics, mature industries set in their ways, and suffocating (but obviously necessary) environmental agencies.
