  • Gold: Currency Or Commodity? [View article]
Apart from the gold rush in the 18th century when was the last time gold was used as a currency, i.e. someone actually put gold on the table to pay for something?

Is currency not that which we price something by? We do not price anything in gold. We price it in dollars, or other actual currencies.

This makes gold a speculation at worst and a commodity at best.

The recent rise of bitcoin really helps us understand the nature of gold.

  • Why A Simple And Timeless Model Fails To Impress [View article]
Thank you very much for the counterarguments.

The SMAs from 2 through 500 is definitely a topic you could expand upon and write a separate article on. I havn't seen that tested the way you did anywhere. Interesting idea and a good argument for/or against timing the market.

  • BAML: "It's getting frothy, man!" [View news story]
You should pay because it is in your best interest to see your neighbor in good health. You know, the guy next door that is gonna find the cure for cancer and give you 10 more years to live or the girl that is gonna write a paper propelling a new and better form of government into existence.

The constitution would not have been made if we did not look out for each other. We would be living in caves banging each other's skulls in and living in fear.

You really wanna deny the next Einstein or Bezos medical treatment because they don't have the right?

  • The Fundamental Flaw Of Stock Indexes [View article]
An equal weight index is also not a formula, just a judgement. There is nothing scientific about the construction of indexes. One index just "feels" more scientific than the other. The S&P and DOW indexes aren't "objective" either, not scientific.

If you claim there exist any "subjective" or "objective" management in finance you're not seeing clearly. It is all socially constructed and only giving meaning because we give it meaning. The market's "judgement" is still a "subjective" judgement.

Anything is in finance is a judgement, not a formula. This is not science.

Because it is in my best interest to keep you alive and well so that you're productive. That way you can take care of me when I'm on the outs with my health. Society is not an island. That's the whole point :P

Healthcare is one of those very few exceptions. The military and rule of law being the other two. Education seems to work well for some countries as well in a non-market environment. :P

  • The Rational Reason To Be Bullish On Gold [View article]
Gold is not under owned before it is only owned by productions facilities that actually put the gleaming metal to some real use.
It is a piece of near-useless metal compared to copper. It has as much place in in a grown man's portfolio as a candy bar. What does CAPM say to the candy market?

Thank you for an enjoyable read. Good research and critique of Curran's piece. HFT continues to be a volatile topic and any contribution to make more transparent is welcome. Your conclusions are spot on I think.

  • Why I Own Gold [View article]
Hey that's no way to treat a negative thing! Think of all the psychologists that would out of a job if we all just locked all of our bad things away and forgot about them ;-)

Don't ignore the bad - bring it out baby!

    Because it is shiny!

I guess in a sense! Think of all that money being put to use in protecting the hoards of gold and the resources being spent on mining a piece shiny metal that will just end up being locked away in a high security vault.

Gold produces just as much value as it did when Adam Smith attacked it 1776: Zilch, zero, nothing. That hasn't changed and any effort to promote that viewpoint and action is a stupendous drag on resources that are better spent elsewhere.

So on a 2nd sense you hit the nail on its head just as Smith did in 1776. No gold = education. When people start thinking about gold as a simple piece of metal it will have educated them!

I'm also optimistic about gold. It is an extremely beautiful piece of metal to behold as is silver. Mercury is just as beautiful in my opinion but that's dangerous to your health.

For usefulness, not so much however. I'll take a Black & Decker power drill over gold. Gold is dangerous to your finances and plays trick on your rationality, just as beautiful women do.

All that gold just sitting there producing value! Hard to understand but I guess it is true!

Why bother with innovation and education when we have GOLD!
