let's not confuse "analysis" with a table of numbers. "data" and "insight" are entirely different things.

So, draw your own conclusions ...

You win the prize. Most pointless article on alpha ... and that, my friend, is SAYING something! Congratulations on reading the columns and rows from yahoo finance: balance sheet on companies. 1) your math stinks (check your table again) 2) using your favorite source, check "other liabilities" for GM vs F. Congratulations on your 15 minutes. It just ran out.

      The Future of GM's Brands
This is "top of mind" here, but I believe that the brand equity of Buick in China (and perhaps Asia, in general?) is quite high as a luxury brand ... which could still argue for selling the brand (for a good price). Your article is very US-focused ... actually, exclusively US-focused ... this is a global company. And, thank goodness for that, otherwise they'd be in even deeper water...

I'm guessing this is the largest stock in your portfolio as you pump the carp out of it ... and now your articles are talking to themselves: theory-rebuttal, etc ... just a thought: the "market" is not usually transparently "stupid" ... their mortgage (and mortgage related) portfolio is still the issue. Just, please, on a personal note ... make sure that your position is appropriately sized. Best of luck ... I lean toward the long-side as well on ETFC but I guess I'm "kinda stupid" since I don't fully understand their balance sheet and its risks, so I'm holding off for now.

Short Ideas: Kick GM While It's Down
Have you ever back-tested a strategy based on analyst upgrades and downgrades? Give it a whirl ... sad commentary on the "talent" embodied in that industry, truly. No doubt GM has its issues and headwinds ... but for me personally, unless an analyst has meaningful insight (rare, quite honestly), I take their upgrades and downgrades with a grain of salt ... in truth, I have to rein in the true cynic in me that wants to take it as a contrary indicator (which is also a mistake, in the sense of putting too much weight on their opinions, contrary or otherwise)...

Short Ideas: Kick GM While It's Down
This would be more insightful if you had written this article in October, rather than after a 60% decline. I bought GM yesterday, as it turns out, as I believe they have made tremendous strides in design and quality improvements, and their push [back] into electric cars is the only logical long-term end-game for the auto industry. You may be 100% correct over the next 6-12 months (if I really thought that, I wouldn't have purchased, of course), but GM is a long-term INTERNATIONAL winner (domestic will never be the growth engine of this company again) ... I'll take it for a long-term (5yrs+) in my portfolio. I will also buy more on price declines... as I'm only at about a "1/2" position at the moment. Best of luck to you (you know, on your OTHER picks ... LOL).

E*Trade: What the Analysts and News Haven't Told You
I have to compliment seeking alpha to have the bandwidth to support all your massive egos. Shut up, make your investment (and then shut up again) ... why do you require the ego-stroke of posting here and bantering back-and-forth? You are like a bunch of school children arguing ...

Yes, yes ... I know ... now, I've posted as well ... "So what does that say about me?" ... well, I suppose it says I have an ego too. Doesn't refute my point above. Shut up already ... and I'll take that advice now as well.

Headwaters: Despite Disappointing Quarter, Turnaround Looks Promising
so, in summary, managment is "projecting" good times ahead, but absolutely no sign of delivering so far ... sure, sounds like a winner to me. There are plenty of good companies at fair prices at there ... why are you chasing a mediocre company at a (arguably) good price? And, how, pray-tell, is this a "growth company". Disclosure: no position in this stock.

Too funny that you include Nortel in the mix ... as an example of global stocks up 2% YTD ... when it is down 60%(ish) YTD ... and with a comment about base metals and commodities ... errr, okay.

I'd guess INTC has another leg down ... never owned it, but am looking to add as a "permanent" holding ... around 15-16/sh. I may be wrong, but that is the "margin of safety" price for me.

Reinko: do you think there were any additions to their assets .... and do you think maybe they are holding loans that are paying them an interest rate higher than they are paying out. I am certainly not blind to NPL and the recent troubles (how could I be), but let's not go to the other extreme, as you seem to be, and simply cut off the 2nd half of the balance sheet that has assets, questionable though SOME may be.

Housing Risk Factor: Keep an Eye out for December Data
I'd love to see what you guys were saying about builders in July, 2005. Quite frankly, if you buy a builder that isn't going out of business (which requires a lot of DD, balance sheet and cash flow analysis), how can you "be wrong" in 5 years? Of course, it might be quite a ride between now and then!
