The New York Times Had Better Change
As a 15 year investor, I doubt if the stock will ever get back to close to $50/share. The B shareholders must be convinced that: a) the odds of improvement are low and b) feel a financial pinch. Only they can effect a sale. The cheapest and lowest risk plan is to do nothing. The current management will do the rest.

New York Times: Cheap Stock, Buyout Candidate
dre: EXACTLY. At $10 and a reduced dividend, to conserve cash, some of the B shareholders would want to sell out. The price would have gone from $50 to $10. If you are living off the dividends, it would be hard to maintain you champagne taste on a beer budget.

The nyt dividend is greater than the pretax profit which is self-liquidation. As cash declines the dividend is in danger. The dividend rate over T-bills is not worth the risk.
