By comparison, the S&P has returned 7.17%. NLY bested the S&P by approximately 3.46% per year over 9 years - when you consider the effect of compounding, that can make a profound difference in total wealth accumulation. Yes, it is a lot of dividends, and that is explicitly what makes NLY an effective wealth-builder over the long-term.
