Finally, an article on this site that fits that criteria instead of shameless talking of one's book.

      Good job, well written.

There's got to be another dividend cut coming this week, which will get more people out of the stock as well. Apr 12 01:58 PM

No is the short answer. When every amateur analyst stops calling a bottom, turning point or some other nonsense every time there is some news like this is about where the bottom will be.

If they let the public actually SEE what these assets were, i'd believe him, otherwise there's no reason to think it's any more than just hollow statements to try to make everyone feel good again. Apr 03 02:51 PM

Why everyone is so anxious to try and call the bottom on financials is beyond me. No one really seemed to notice, GS, LEH and MS all have had disasterous performance y/o/y.

If you don't want to short, don't. But with all the "fantasy-based&qu... products that generated profits gone, not sure why anyone thinks this group won't just trade sideways for years once a bottom is found.

    • The Long Case for Akeena Solar [view article]
The solar momentum is done, sorry if you're stuck at a higher entry point, but solar IS NOT the solution to our energy problems and certainly not deserving of the high P/Es during the irrational run it had last year. Last year's winners rarely repeat, I would be even more surprised in any real run in solar with the conditions of the markets for the next few months. Jan 26 04:31 PM

I don't understand your point about including renters in with the poor. I am a proud renter who's never made made more when it comes to a salary and who's saving more than i ever have because I never believed that granite countertops, a fresh paint job and stainless steel appliances added 10-20% to a value of a home.

There are many "poor" renters who've never been in better shape today because they have avoided the panic to "invest in a home at any cost" and ultimately caused this mess.

Brave position going long on the solars, the trend seems pretty obvious to me that the market has no tolerance right now for the spec growth stocks like solar right now. I think it's a pretty dangerous place to be trying to find a bottom, esp. in SPWR with such a high PE.

Keep in mind that Germany has been one of the best friends to the solar stocks and have recently passed legislation to start slashing subsidies starting in 2009. Which means they will have to sell even more product to offset the declining subsidies that start in 2009 and continue to get slashed in the following years (5% a year if i remember right)

      Disclosure: Short SPWR & FSLR.

    • A Rare Opportunity To Buy AmEx On The Cheap [view article]
I have nothing against Amex, no positions here, but I think the 9-11 comparison isn't really a good one to use here. 9-11 was a surprise attack that caught everyone off guard. No one saw that coming and what would happen immediately afterwards.

What we're beginning to see is that the "subprime bubble" might actually be a "consumer bubble" with people living well beyond their means for too long. Subprime is sure a big part of it, but you don't hear much (yet) about the credit card debt and loan debt people made in the same timeframe.

For every subprime loan that was made on overinflated home, how many HELOCs were taken out to their max values in the same timeframe?

Cracks are starting to appear and they could spread a lot quicker now that the dam is bursting.

I don't doubt that Amex will be a good company to own in the future, i'm just not sure you won't be better off waiting on the financials. I do not believe this is a "rare opportunity" at all.
