  • Why Volatility Is An Essential Asset Class To Own  [View article]
Would these fund rake in the dough during prolonged backwardation, or would their arbitrage method break down? VXX, TVIX, UVXY; these are designed to be worthless long term BUT they can pay handsomely short term. Could they wind up chasing the futures market?(the ARMOR products)

It is not a "hedge on volatility", but a long market position hedge using volatility. I use TVIX, but it cannot be held long term and contango has destroyed it these last three years. Backwardation could be imminent though and if that happens the leveraged volatility ETFs should rocket......
I like the concept and I hope it is sound.

  • iRobot Corp.: About To Short-Circuit  [View article]
I'm not holding it now, buy I will. I have made 20k from IRBT. If it gets low, I say "load up". If it gets to 10 you would be remiss not to purchase it. I will get back in at what I can determine is the bottom of this downtrend. Long term it is a possible Sci-fi stock.

TVIX does not have "potential automatic acceleration"? Is this accurate? Thanks all for the information and views. Investing in CS's ETNs does expose you to the banks credit risk though, very good point. Long story short, If you are holding TVIX and develop a profit, institute a rolling stop loss order. If the market tanks badly after the FED is finished and VIX futures enter backwardation, will these products not rocket upwards?

  • Is UPS A Good Dividend Pick?  [View article]
Your volume numbers are way off. Maybe those figures you stated were air volume. But ~15 million packages are delivered daily to customers and ~2million pickups are made. As for the Pension; I think the union plan is 100% funded (UPS's part of the liability) and the nonunion pension (managers, supervisors, etc) is not a severe strain on finances. UPS took the pension over in order to avert a future disaster some time back.

I just discovered that. Folks have been raking in the dough with xiv and shorting TVIX. Do you mean it is hard to get shares loaned to individual investors because of all the others (big players) already taking advantage of that sure bet over a long enough time span?

Shorting TVIX is a sure bet if you have enough money it seems, because it WILL eventually go down.

I have used TVIX as a hedge and a speculative play. Which investment type was this gentleman engaging in I wonder? If the latter then....but if the former I could see a problem perhaps? Seeking alpha (Josh Krouse's articles) educated me about the structure and danger of VIX etf's and the fact that over a long enough time curve they are designed to be worth 0. Meaning; VIX ETF'S ARE A SHORT TERM INVESTMENT! VIX ETF'S ARE A SHORT TERM INVESTMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!...

  • Union troubles for UPS  [View news story]
Do you really believe "just having a driver's license" will make you a UPS Service Provider (driver)? UPS is VERY good to its employees with every kind of pay and benefit imaginable. They do expect (demand) that said employees be the most productive in the world. Discipline can be draconian, especially for drivers, but a system of checks and balances make it fair in the end 95% of the time.

Long story Short... UPS requires a lot of blood, sweat, time and tears in return for the EARNED super-awesome pay and benefits package. <no pun intended.

Most drivers are veteran employees with at least a decade with the company.
So you will need to have a driver's license AND a little more than that.

All the NY employees should stick to the grievance procedure. They are bound by the collective bargaining agreement. They will have a local hearing about their termination. If the issue is not resolved here, then they will have their "day in court" at a panel. If the issue is STILL not resolved it will be decided by an independent arbitrator. These steps are essentially set in stone.

  • The Cash On The Sidelines Myth Lives On  [View article]
Very interesting article and discussion. I understand the market is a zero-sum game, but is it not liquidity that rules how much buying power or "cash on the sidelines" is really available? When the QE is caput and rates start rising, will liquidity not dry up or evaporate even? All the discussion aside, these charts are very compelling.
Do you have a chart that includes liquidity with supply and allocation?

    Job well done.

  • Arrowhead Research - Ground-Floor Opportunity Or Biotech Bubble Baby?  [View article]
Did they sell any of the other nanotechnology related patents and IP they used to own unrelated to biotech and pharma? When they were a un-biotech-focused venture capital firm they had many other patents, etc. ?

  • Arrowhead Research Corp: What Am I Missing?  [View article]
TINY has a lot of cash and no debt. The stock isn't diluted much and Management has said they will concentrate on raising the stock's NAV and shareholder equity. It seems support is firm at 3, but resistance is 3.20ish long term. I accumulated this one to the predetermined 10k shares for the long hold (pain). I'm hoping for an ADEP moment.

I accumulated 6000 shares of arwr a long time ago when I was putting together my nanotech portfolio. I took big hits. I currently hold 10000 TINY, which I believe will be a multibagger in time. 600 ARWR after that 1 for 10 split they pulled to not be delisted, I had kind of forgotten about it until it started running up again. It was in the "bankrupt bin" with NANX and ALTI. I never sold any of these losers and probably wont add to the old positions. Harris and Harris is also a venture capitol firm like Arrowhead, I would recommend Harris and Harris to anyone wanting to get a taste of Nanotech.
Thanks for the article and insights........

  • How To Play Organovo Holdings  [View article]
Thanks for your insight, Marsha. Thanks for the stop-loss strategy just1tom. I have 1k shares of onvo with a cost basis of 6.75. I think a rolling stop starting at 10 would be prudent. I shall implement this.
    Happy New Years...........
