Why Research In Motion Likes UMA
How about this instead: the FCC and FTC do their jobs, force TRUE cell service competition in the US, and we device owners get complete freedom to use our toys as we see fit. You know, that crazy model Nokia pushes that works in other parts of the world.

Oops, I'm sorry, I had a momentary lapse of blind consumerism.

Is User Apathy About Smartphones Becoming Apparent?
There are some fundamental flaws in both the article and the fanboy responses, but I'll be kind and just point out a few:

-The assessment of smartphone desire ignores the reality of paradigm shifts and demographic differences. Claiming that US users don't want to download applications is overly broad and ignorant. People tend to not want what they don't know. Education works wonders, and THAT is Nokia's real challenge here. Remember, at one point the average consumer didn't *need* a cell phoen at all. Wasn't that long ago, either. Things change. Companies drive that. That makes dithers' comment above on target (although I question the difficulty of installing apps on the N95).

-The OS does not alone make or break a smartphone. Linux is just as capable as supporting smartphone functionality as any other OS-- even more so in some cases.

-Given its functionality, many consider the iPhone to be a smartphone, and many market measurements are placing it in that category for comparisons. Treating it as alien to smartphones is disingenuous. Some people are confusing novelty with overall functionality.

-The iPhone is not the Holy Grail.

-I own a Nokia smartphone. It is very easy too use.

-Symbian sales are down, in large part, to guess what: a downward economy. I realize that comes as a shock to the ivory tower theorists who still insist the months-long recession isn't here yet, but those of us paying attention for the last 2 years have a clue.

Microsoft Figured We'd All Be on Vista by Now
I would find it hard to believe MS had not tested AMD CPUs in general, much less AMD-equipped systems from HP. Sheesh. That *does* sound suspicious. I build with AMD due to price/performance and the desire to support competition. If AMD were to disappear, it would NOT be good-- even for the Intel fanatics!

As for Vista, MS reached a point of near-diminishing returns with XP. That OS was finally what most of us had been wanting. It was like reaching the peak of Everest after traipsing across sand dunes. From this point on, barring any revolutionary advances, every OS will simply be the result of tweaking. The only real advantage Vista has provided me is in the area of security, and they actually went too far in some respects (when is it going to learn to shut up when it comes to trusted actions and sources???).

The WiMax Deal Is a Disaster: How Google Got Snookered
Point #3 is incorrect. WiMAX enabled devices, like Nokia's WiMAX version of the N810 internet tablet, are either out now or will be very shortly-- not "a long way away". So scratch the "chicken and egg" scenario.

And you may have valid reasons for pessimism, but none of the obstacles you mention are insurmountable. If past innovators let your sort of complaints get to them, we wouldn't be having this internet exchange right now.

The Music Industry’s New Extortion Scheme
I think such a fee is only fair and reasonable. A fee like this might have mitigated or even prevented the DRM/pirating nightmare that's been plaguing society for years. It doesn't have to be exorbitant, either, to be useful. It doesn't even have to be the nightmare (ie, "extortion") it's alleged it will become.

Bottom line, there's no perfect system, and artists deserve to be paid. Period. But I agree that the labels are a huge part of the problem. Implement the fee, have the funds managed by BMI/ASCAP/et al, and leave the labels out of it if possible.

Nokia Ready to Exploit Motorola's Weakness
I think the previous comment is a bit naive and hyperbolic. "The entire handset business" will NOT be all about exploiting third world countries, although that will surely represent a large, and likely even majority, percentage of the effort.

Still, North America remains a key market in many respects, most particularly smartphones and business mobility. Nokia will continue to push for multimedia computers to take a larger share of the overall handset market, and the US will be a big factor in that.

Mark Cuban, Is the Stock Market Still for Suckers?
How would this article have gone if 2007 had lasted a few more weeks? As one poster noted, a l,ot of gains are being erased as paranoia (and sanity) seep in.

It's easy to crow when the wind blows your way, but we all know the market is just as fickle. Had the banks and fed not propped up the housing (market of) cards last year, Cuban would be getting the last word.

2008 Will Bring More Platforms to Video Gaming
Don't count Nokia completely out. If the company chooses to get decent gaming going on the N800 and N810 palmtop computers, they'll have something. It remains to be seen if that will manifest, though.
