Expensive Commodities and the Stock Market [View article]
Seems like a useful article to me...the only investment I here I'm not participating in is defense--my assumption being that in a few months (February) BO will stop all wars, bringing a new era of peace to the world (consequently no need for new weapons). The idea we may have to replace weapons used in Iraq and Afghanistan is interesting, but would be short term.
The article is most likely directionally correct. I would add that although solar has its place in the future--wind, wave, biofuels, advanced batteries, natural gas, liquified coal, nuclear, and other energy sources will also be good investments.
Investors should not make the mistake of concentrating on only one answer--one size (solution) does not fit all (needs).
My Top 5 Alternative Energy Stocks - and 10 Honorable Mentions [View article]
Thank you Andrew for an excellent article...and a discussion starter!
Fortunately, I don't need to hit a lot of home runs (which usually means being a .250 hitter); I'm comfortable being a .300 hitter with a lot of singles and doubles, and few strike-outs.
I very much like the alternative energy industry, but I am not certain which stocks, or even technologies, will be the winners in 5 years -- let alone in 30 years! I very much suspect (a) there will be a shakeout, perhaps violently so, with most of the alternative energy companies disappearing (clearly, some are pursuing dead-ends or have poor managements), and (b) the winners will not be one technology, but several which are best for different applications. Therefore, I like to spread the risks with ETF's plus a few individual stocks added.
Thanks to you, I'll now consider adding Applied Materials to my portfolio.

I also like the ETFs, they make especially good sense for investing in infant industries (which solar still is).
With respect to Citigroup’s Timothy Arcuri, I suspect not one of you who flame him has ever worked in a corporate invironment...if you had, you would know that some very bright folks work in poor companies, and visa versa. Simply put: your attacks lack credibility.
