  • Alberta oil sands will struggle without pipelines, Total CEO says [View news story]
Canada should not depend on their unreliable friend the USA. They should approve Enbridge's Northern Gateway pipeline and KMI's TransMountain expansion and then Canada would be independent of friends that are extorting money from American companies.

  • Alcoa Is Not A Sound Pick Going Into Second Quarter Earnings [View article]
    Alcoa is cutting costs.

The company is taking aggressive actions to lower the cost base of its commodity business and announced a number of smelting capacity reduction decisions recently, which will improve its margins in the primary metals segment.

The biggest cost in aluminum production is electricity. Electricity price will have as big if not bigger factor on AA bottom line than LME price. We are in a NG exploration boom. At more and more electricity is produced by cheap NG rather than dirty coal, AA's advantage in the aluminum production will increase over China production. Perhaps the greenies will caught on to this and try to boycott China aluminum production.

Aluminum is also used it high voltage electrical transmission lines, not copper. With the replacement of coal plants with NG plants new transmission lines will have to be built with aluminum. Also, auto companies like Ford, are going to use a larger percentage of structural aluminum in car bodies.

With aerospace, more light weight aluminum being used in car production and the need to reinforce our HV transmission grid, aluminum will be more in demand. Did you read AA has developed a new and cheaper alloy for vehicle bodies?

    Check out:

Didn't AA just cut production in Brazil so AA could sell the electricity for more than they would have made producing electricity?

And I will not even go into the brilliant decision by Klaus Kleinfeld and his team to buy RTI and some other jet engine making company.

AA is another company have in my ROTH IRA and am investing all dividends to eventually pass on to my daughter.

"In May alone, aluminum prices were down 12% on the London Metal Exchange (LME)." Again can someone help me explain why aluminum prices are falling while the graph below shows aluminum warehouse storage his about 50% of levels 7 years age.
