Great list, good luck. Here a couple of my own.
I will own more ETF's the mutual funds. I will own more stocks then ETF's. Getting costs out is imperative, but not at the cost of good diversification.
Adequate Volume is essential. (following on your volatility comments)
There is no substitute for a quality company and quality management. Never settle, buy the best at a reasonable price. If not available, wait.
Minimize exposure to leverage. I avoid debt in my personal life. I need to avoid owing companies that employ undue leverage. Must never forget this lesson.
