Brahm: excellent post. I'd add one item to the success of shale today : the technology required and the application thereof. the application is kind of related to the specialized manpower/experienced resources. These folks are being paid huge sums to leave one comapny and go to work for their competitors.

Alaska Gas: won't see the U.S. lower 48 for at least 8 years...maybe longer. There's a lot of demand to be filled in the meantime.

MattB: assume you typo'd "Alabama"...... Shale is in Arkansas!

The problem with all of the basins you list is offtake; there isn't enough pipeline capacity to take huge amounts of gas "overnight". So, there are several projects getting kicked off to expand the capacity but these will take a couple of years. Hence, the "not overnight" comment.

And I'm guessing our crooks, errrr politicians, (apologies to the crooks for the disparaging comparison) will get their panties in a wad when companies start shutting in gas. But, a lot of this gas is not economical below $7-8 so yes, the pace of drilling will be reduced if prices drop into that range.

One thing to add to the author's post: The expectations of "The Street" for the pace of development in the Marcellus is significantly 'hyped'; no way does the drilling ramp up as fast as everyone is expecting. Permitting, water supply issues, water disposal issues, NIMBY issues, will all conspire to slow things down considerably. Take whatever forecast you hear for drilling over the next 3 years and assume that number of wells will be drilled over the next 5-7 years. But that's good; it will provide a floor for the price. Sorry consumers. Your price to heat the house and keep the lights on will be going up and staying up.

And, LNG will continue to lag in the U.S.; why ship it to the US for $8/mmBTU when you can send it to China/Japan for $15??

Houston to Obama: Smell the Oil
Jack Gordon: you are right; My Republicans are spending like drunken sailors. Unfortunately, if you listen to what the Annointed One is promising to do, he will spend MORE! Nationalized healthcare, carbon taxes, or cap and trade, more $1000 checks/bribes to get people to vote for him, the list goes on and on. He has not met a group of people yet that he hasn't promised something to that will cost other people money. Except for those who supply 90% of the tax revenue. Those SOB's are going to get soaked! But the 50% of the country supplying little-to-no tax revenue, he promises to give them lots of goodies! How could he not win the election? over 50% of the voters pay little or no tax. He promises to give them lots of money. It cost them nothing so they say "heck yeah, I'll vote for that guy. He's giving me something for nothing." Now the guys who have to pay for it (that's me and probably you) have no choice. They are in the minority, they will get outvoted by the takers and the law requires they give up their hard earned money for redistribution to the takers.

Put a little weight on the guy, teach him spanish and he's a dead ringer for Hugo Chavez!

Please don't mistake my quote of the "Redistribution&q... comment as my support for same. In fact, I am in violent opposition to redistribution and I think eventually it may take a violent opposition to get the government's hands out of my pocket. With an Annointed One's election, I fear a tax revolt may be the only option. Hence his opposition to the Second Amendment and our right to bear arms. You don't put in place policies like he is eschewing and spewing without an armed military to back them up. Just ask Hugo!

CT: we agree on many things. However, your view that the tax cuts were not a good idea is where we diverge. With expenditure cuts, the tax cuts would have been a great idea and I still think they are a good idea. Look at the revenue...our tax revenue has continued to soar well beyond the rate of inflation. How can that be? we cut taxes so why is revenue continuing to go up? we need to limit gov't revenue growth to something around the GDP growth rate. or inflation.

Now you say you won't vote for McCain...that basically says you will vote for the Chose/Annointed One. either directly or indirectly. So I guess you approve of a massive increase in spending, even beyond what's happened during GW's watch? His new medical plan; his other give aways. And guess what, he won't be pulling the plug on Iraq...that money will continue to go there one way or another.

Look for an even greater share of your money going to the governtment to use on a highly ineffecient set of programs. Congrat's. If you don't mind that then why not just write a big extra check to the gov't on your own. Donate.

CT: "One of the roles of government is to re-distribute wealth"...man my copy of the Constitution must have gotten messed up. I can't find that in there anywhere. Yes, we have a tax and over the years, the Great Society and other giveaways have become progressive taxes. I believe we are a lot closer to socialism than you believe...when over 25% of everything I make is taken away from me and squandered? And at this point, 33% of every new dollar I make is taken away? I don't mind paying for the military and I wish I were paying to keep our borders protected/secured but that's another big kettle of fish. But give-aways these goofy stimulus checks, welfare, etc. is just stealing my money and giving it away. I would prefer that I be allowed to choose where I donate my money and that those who get it show just a little bit of gratitude. And that they would have to work for it!

bmes...a startup would struggle to build a deepwater drilling rig...the complexity involved as well as the total cost is staggering. Would you say a start-up could build a new fighter jet?? Well, that's the technological scale of a deepwater drilling rig. Be realistic.

User239762...you speak badly of the Annointed One...you must be a racist!! Ha Ha...tongue planted firmly in cheek.

Paulk: There are 49 Rep Senators today but even I expect that to be lower after November as the Dem's lie and promise to give away money to the masses. Let's say its down to 45 (hopefully). Then there's the small problem of the RHINO's (Rep's In Name Only). Olympia Snowe et al are just Dem's dressed in Rep's clothing. They are moderates that should be banned from the party. YOu can't count on them voting with their brains. So, we get pretty darned close to a point where we can't block the Annointed One's horrendous policies. That is why we must stop him at the ballot box. He cannot be allowed to win this election. All legal means must be used to expose his crap, his marxist policies, his socialist policies, etc.

PK: first, you give the Annointed One much more respect than I will ever give him. And as someone pointed out earlier, why aren't people in an uproar over the lack of respect shown the current sitting president? Naming a sewage plant after him...poking fun at all times...

Second, the term "Annointed One" or "The One" or "The Chosen One" relates to the way O is being treated by the press and his mind-numbed followers. The press won't report anything bad and are generally giving him rock star/movie star treatment. Its as if they have deemed him president already. And just ask an "Annointed One" follower to name 3 things that he has ever done that has helped America. All you will get will be tear downs of GW or attacks of McCain. But you will never, ever get anything that he has done. Then ask what he has promised he will do when elected. Not "Fix healthcare" or "fix energy" but what are his plans. And if you are lucky enough to hear a plan, the plan should scare the shoots out of you. But don't worry, you probably won't get a plan because these fools don't know about the plans. They just know that he is "hope" and "change" and that's why we vote for him. Hence, "The Annointed One" title. If the shoe fits....

BTW, Hitler promised "hope" and "change" too! Ask the Germans how that worked out for them!! "hope" and "change" without any detail can backfire~~

      Dohhhh.

I believe some people are starting to "get it" as the poll numbers are starting to move to a closer race than anyone in the media would like you to believe. The real Lib's are going to hate the Annointed One as he is flip flopping on all of his real Lib ideas (not that he's changing his mind, just that he's changing his story and telling lies). There are still a lot of Hillary folks who won't vote for him. Very few real conservatives will vote for him. And then there's that group that won't vote for him because he's different (according to the Chosen One's own words). All of them together will make for an interesting mixture. And a large enough group for the Though Police to look after. Maybe we will be able to hide from them!!

Mr. Jonathan: thank you for calling this "plan" by the Annointed One what it really is...redistribution of wealth. And why is the author's point not "fair" to middle class Americans? His point is why single out 5 companies for "one off" taxation? Particularly when those companies don't make a large percentage off of their revenues? Is this really a tax on "really big companies who make a lot and so should share it with others"? Why not tax all the blood sucking companies? Start with Microsoft. Their margin is large and their revenue is large.

Comparing the Annointed One's policy to that of Chavez is very appropriate. They both have the same philosphy...take from those who make and give to those who don't. I'd love to see Big OIl just move out of the U.S. so that the greedy tax hogs would find another whipping boy!

But I thought putting air in my tires would make prices come down? "He" said it so it must be so!! Oh Annointed One, how will we all figure out how much air is in our tires without the government telling us? Can't you give us some more money to use to go to the gas station to get someone to read our air pressure and put air in our tires? After all, those mean greedy oil companies have sucked out our will to live on proper inflated tires!!

I read the article and found it to be complete crappola. Not worth my time commenting on anymore. I cut and pasted the comment above and sent it to the author.

If XOM spent more on E&P they would be hammered by Wall Street for a lack of capital discipline. Believe me, I've been in the conference calls and heard the questions and reactions to responses. Plus, I really think the opportunities to spend more are very limited. So to ensure that a risk-based portfolio of investment yields good returns, XOM cannot ramp up extreme wildcat exploration a great deal. That leads to poor results and lots of wasted money. That's the reply to queen nancy and the chosen messiah-O to their cute little "Big Oil isn't drilling on the land they already have" dittie. The land the isn't being drilled is being worked at the science level to determine if there are prospects to be drilled and if the risk/reward equation makes sense.

Paying executives...pretty much think that's a problem across wall street and until Boards of Directors grow independent and with backbone, its not changing. But not a Big OIl exclusive!

What's a Monday without a bash of Exxon, eh Phil?

Why is it surprising that XOM pays more to foreign governments than in US taxes? An overwhelming amount of Exxon's work and reserves and production come from foreign countries, so why wouldn't an overwhelming percentage of the fees/taxes/confiscatio... go to those governments?? And why are you so darned interested in driving and Oil and Gas company toward alternatives? Why not have companies specializing in alternatives investing in alternatives and have oil and gas companies investing in oil and gas and returning profit to shareholders? As a shareholder of XOM, I like it when they give me dividiends and buy back stock. That gives me the flexibility to invest that money in alternatives.

To support the earlier figure, I give you stat's from JS Herolds on Exxon's "New Sources" of oil/gas in 2007-2015:

      27% from Qatar
      20% from West Africa
      11% from Canada
      10% from Norway
      9% from U.S.
      8% from Kazakstan

again, why shouldn't the majority of the fees/royalties and taxes go to other countries?

And, instead of just quoted US Fed Income Taxes and compare to all charges/fees to foreign governments, why not be a bit more CONSISTENT and compare total fees paid to US governments via state taxes and royalties to the federal government and the states?? That $5 billion number would grow substantially. And how about the royalties paid to private land/minerals owners? That's a big number too. In foreign countries, there are no payments to private owners as the countries own the minerals. And while you are at it, throww in the production/severance taxes. And make sure you throw in Alaska's 50% production tax that was just implemented (Alaska now has one of the world's highest government takes on oil/gas production!! Hello Hugo Chavez, meet Ms. Palin!).

Beat up Exxon all you want but at least have the intestinal fortitude to do a consistent, like-for-like comparison instead of cheap shotting and then parading the ridiculous "windfall" profits tax around. What next? Maximum wage allowances to go with Minimum wages? Oops, forgot, we have a presidential "messiah" who already thought of that and makes it part of his economic platform.
