  • Investment Strategy: What Portfolio Withdrawal Rate Can You Live With? [View article]
TGC004, actually I don't "stay on top of 65" quite like you may be thinking. I spend three to four hours a day on our investments. And I'm retired, so I have all the time I need. But I try to avoid picking a winner. I can't accurately predict that T will beat VZ or vice-versa, so I buy them both, and then added TLSYY, BCE and TU. Now with 65 equity investments (plus another 30 on the watch list) some aren't going to work out, that is, the revenue and/or EPS will fall. In these instance I do have to dig in and form an opinion. I owned WU when it fell from $18 to $12 in about a day. I ended up buying more as I was willing to bet that their basic business is good. We'll see.

  • Johnson & Johnson At Multi-Year Highs Ahead Of 4Q Earnings [View article]
Yes, but over the last year JNJ and SPY had virtually the same total return. And JNJ's debt is rated AAA. It's a exceptional company.
    I'm long JNJ.

"100% certainty" is a lot to expect. So many things (recessions, depressions, hyper-inflation, super-high interest rates, more and more taxes, extreme costs of medical and long-term care, etc.) can up end our well laid plans. Nevertheless, I feel better about it when I think of our investments as owning tiny-tiny pieces of big, strong companies with great track records over many years. That view and substantial diversification (about 65 equity positions and 20 fixed income holdings) convinces me that dividend growth investing is the best approach.

  • 4 REITs That Rock Like They're New Kids On The Block [View article]
Brad, thanks for your excellent work. I've owned some REITs for many years and they've done well. Recently, I've bought several that I read about in your postings--ARCT, HTA, MPW and STAG. While they're smaller and less seasoned than many others, they're growing faster. That STAG's stock price went up while they were still on the roadshow speaks well the management teams ability to tell the story.
    Thanks, again.

  • General Mills: Attractive Risk/Reward Warrants A Buy [View article]
I will be thrilled if GIS grows its EPS and dividends by 6% a year.
With its yield of 3.2% that 6% growth would produce, over time, right at a double-digit total return. For a very high quality company in a low inflation/low interest rate world that's a great deal. I'm long GIS and HNZ.

Not careful enough with your numbers, Mr. H.
I'm long both. Solid companies with wide moats.
They make lots of money and pay most of it to their shareholders.
    I'm for more of that.
