  • These 2 High-Yield Picks Could Supercharge Your Portfolio With Dividends And Capital Appreciation [View article]
BDCs are risky, indeed. 10% to 12% distributions don't come without substantial risk of capital loss. That said I've had about 2.5% of equities in ARCC, FSC and PSEC. Trying to spread the risk some, but it probably doesn't help too much.

Agreed. I built my full position over the past year at slightly under the current price. Expect to hold for years.

  • Buckeye Partners: Slow Growth Can Still Build Wealth For Your Portfolio [View article]
BPL's exceptional record speaks for itself. MMP also has a great record and is doing very well, and that's priced into the units. If MMP raises it's distribution per unit by 15% each year for five straight years it would reach $4.71 in 2019. BPL's current distribution per unit is $4.35; BPL's growth will likely be in the low to mid single digits. At some point MMP's growth will slow to about the same level. The classic trade off. In this case I'll take BPL.
Long BPL and several other pipelines.

  • Has The Market Priced Too Much Risk Into Kinder Morgan Energy Partners? [View article]
You make some good points and I tend to agree with you.
I'm biased--long KMR and KMI along with several other pipelines.
Intend to stand pat for now.

  • Assessing The Growth Scare At Kinder Morgan [View article]
    Thanks for you opinion.
I'm long KMR, KMI, BPL, EEQ, SE, SEP, EPD and TRGP.
Some of these are far better at providing growth. Others, due to stock price
declines from stalled growth, are higher yielding. For now I'm holding on to all of them.

  • Vanguard VIG Top 10 Hits Bottom On Total Return [View article]
Diversification of dividend income is, IMO, at least as important as diversification of assets. While I'm long VIG, VFWAX and EEM, I would not buy VIG today. I own many of VIG's holdings. VFWAX and EEM (I'd buy VWO today, but I bought EEM ten years ago) are much more difficult to replicate.

Bob, thank you for posting your ideas, which are always interesting and useful.
You make some excellent points. I like having some corporate bonds in my portfolio (about 25% with the rest in REITs, pipelines, utilities and core holdings such as JNJ, XOM, etc.).

  • The BDC Portion Of My Portfolio [View article]
BDCs are obviously risky. You don't get double digit distribution returns on KO or JNJ. I'm long ARCC, FSC and PSEC in roughly equal amounts. In total about 3% of equities, but about 7% of the income from equities. That's enough for me.
