  • Seadrill swings to loss on $1.8B writedown, accelerates cost cuts  [View news story]
I doubt it is considered TBTF; more like so big reasonable effort could/should be made to give it every opportunity to not fail.

It seems to me though SDRL is looking to aggressively cut costs and push out new build commitments. If (emphasis) they are successful in this I don't see why they shouldn't survive assuming oil re-balances in 3 years or less.

I'm more concerned with a strategic BK but you are right Norway might suffer a bit if that were to happen.

Well the if is whether or not SDRL has to do BK first.

Likely being sold at break even or for a loss either way shouldn't impact revenues that much.

alternative fuels will get crushed over the next year or two as Oil remains low. Government subsidies not large enough to offset the price cuts they would need to make.

<What you think is the bottom> remember he is always looking forward and likely just found something that will appreciate faster than CBI will as it is a market hated stock currently.

It went from $80 -> sub $40 basically due to oil despite it having very little to do with the actual price of oil. The accounting issues should have been vetted out by now... no SEC action or court appearances likely a non-factor now. Clarity with no nuke business should have been a good boost but may take more time to vet out after a couple of quarters.

WB probably thinks he can go to a stock the market doesn't hate and make more money.

It is a negative but not in the way most think likely.

  • DJ: Canadian Pacific Railway proposes merger to Norfolk Southern  [View news story]
It can be a logistical nightmare but data systems for tracking where cars are have been built with the sole purpose of tracking these. It isn't perfect though I worked in a department for a non-RR company where at months end we would spend hours trying to find cars of our stuff the RR had 'misplaced'.

This is a common thing in the railroad; & cars are not only owned by the railroads but also other companies (they are called "private set cars").

Sometimes you have stuff loaded say up in western canada that needs to get to the east coast of the US. Well no one railroad can provide that service so the cars are then switched over to lines owned by other RR. This may seem odd but it really isn't cars are really treated as exchangeable commodity between RR. This example is an extreme but is the easiest one to explain/articulate.
