  • Death Of A Stock

The death of a classmate is always a reminder that every day is special and should never be taken for granted. In a different time period you are jumping over a brook on a hot summer day, thirty years later reading an obituary shaking your head.Time passes too quickly without ever really saying goodbye. The same can be said for stocks you traded successfully in past years. One of these stocks announced last Friday it was winding down as a public entity ceasing to trade anymore.Steel Cloud - SCLD - had it's day in the sun never reaching their full potential. They did mobile system work for BlackBerry - BBRY - with a future that looked promising at the onset. The end will offer no value for current shareholders as the trading winds down.No tears here as much money was made in past trading and only one hundred shares remained from the last lot.As an old classmate is never forgotten so will this stock remain in my memory. The future of trading requires looking ahead as we leap over the brook of Wall Street.

    Disclosure: I am long SCLD.

  • I Saw Red Today

Every year some tanned face comes on Business Television and says to "Sell in May and go away ". Then the hordes sell their stocks and retire to the beach to enjoy the fruits of their labor. At least this is how the story goes or becomes a myth that everyone repeats.Someone forgot the date or the cabana needs extra care in 2014.Either way a whole lot of selling has been taking place. Will this be a repeat of 2008 or a road bump in the middle of the night? Not that it was unexpected or not possible at some point.Even Dennis Gartman looks confused at this week's action.Come to think of it no one has shouted buy more Netflix recently. What are your thoughts on the future direction of the Stock Market ? Enjoy the weekend. Kenneth J. Parish

  • McDonald's Closes Three Restaurants In Russia

On a Saturday morning while doing the regular weekly shopping,my daughter commented on how long ago was the last McDonald's visit.Early on we told her that the trips would be rare since her mother is a great cook who dislikes most restaurants. So time allowed for a rare journey inside the famous place. It had been probably two years since the last inside visit and the establishment was renovated very nice.I wanted to try the coffee and my daughter had her eyes on a new pony toy in a Happy Meal.My Wife ordered a coffee as well and gave a good opinion on the new decor.Where we sat I noticed a T.V. adding a new touch to the ambiance. The Television was tuned to CNN with a report that the search was still on for the missing plane.Across the bottom scrolled a report that McDonald's closed 3 restaurants in the Crimea.I thought it ironic that the news flashed at the same time I was in the restaurant. At first the news made little difference as McDonald's - MCD - has around 34,000 structures worldwide. But then I remembered that they had about 400 in Russia total. What would happen if Russia retaliated and ordered their business inspectors to close the rest.It might seem insignificant at this moment but it could catch on in other places all around the world.Big events can start with small disruptions that are barely noticed at first. This may or might not turn into a big deal but a close watch is warranted.Less Happy Meals in Russia means less profits in America.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.
