  • Russia's Decision To Turn Off The Gas This Winter

Sometimes the threats are a tool to use as a way of forcing a group to change actions.European/American sanctions against Russia will force a move that may result in reducing the flow of Natural Gas this Winter.Already reports trickling in from Poland that deliveries were cut by 25%.Is this a harbinger of tricks to be played throughout the long cold Winter? Or will smaller payments from Europe squeeze the Russian Economy into a full-blown recession? These questions will be answered very shortly as the Calendar cares less about geopolitical maneuvers then it does about staying warm.Might be a great time to load up on European retail stocks that sell heavy sweaters, down comforters, and flannel bathrobes. The winds of Siberia take no prisoners.

  • Winter Is Coming

A leaked memo suggests the European Union is preparing sanctions against Russian Energy companies. On the surface this appears to be insane since Europe receives a great amount of Natural Gas from Russia. My feeling is the EU must have a Plan B in place to offset Russia turning off the heating spigots.Coal shipments would be logical and preferably an American outlet would be the choice.Ships loaded with coal traveling the Atlantic Ocean to provide the heat needed for a cold winter ahead.I once waited for a bus in Romania during a cold spell and the temperature was -17 degrees.A Siberian Wind blew down from the North and I can tell you that was the coldest I have ever been in my life.On Friday I bought shares of Peabody Energy - BTU - the largest coal producer in the United States. This week I will look for more coal and shipping stocks for future trades. In Europe one knows that Winter looms ahead as the trees change colors.Heat will be needed soon as the Siberian Wind blows down from the Arctic Circle.Stay warm Mama and Tata.

  • Sparse Crowds At U.S.Retail Shops

You should never take any observation from a T.V. news anchor at face value. The eyes you were given at birth observe from a better vantage point and do not cloud the obvious story.Excuses like the weather can only be used for so long before someone realizes that the sun is shining and the day is quite pleasant.I have been in a half a dozen retail stores in the last month and have seen a dearth of shoppers in most places.Kohl's had the most people but one employee commented that everyone must be at the beach this weekend. This is due to the annual Back To School trips getting the kids ready for next week.Other parts of the country already have started classes but here in New Jersey the beginning is after Labor Day.I realize that Back To School shopping is not as abundant as it was in the past but where are the shoppers? Online sales are going up every year and that did not exist in it's present form 12-15 years ago.The answer must be a complex one because no one has a definitive response to the original question. So where are all the shoppers and why are there so many stores? If everyone is shopping online then more stores are not needed, right. As always your comments are greatly appreciated.Have a great Labor Day weekend. Kenneth J Parish.
