  • Cheap, abundant nat gas a bigger threat to coal than Obama's regulations [View news story]
I don't think ANR has the cash, or the ability to raise cash, to make the investment needed for Natural Gas business, so they contribute land and form JV's. At this point, it would be a miracle if their coal business doesn't drive them to restructure.

ANR is mainly CAPP coal and Met. But if CAPP thermal stays obsolete, then ANR would have to restructure. A V-Shaped recovery in both CAPP and Met coal is ANR's only hope - what are the odds of that happening?

BTU has the most diversified portfolio (ILB, PRB, and Australia). So right now my bet is on BTU.

  • EPA coal proposal survives challenge in U.S. Circuit Court [View news story]
You never know. Coal is abundant and a good source of energy. It would be a waste of resources to just ignore it completely.

Perhaps one of these days, an alternative energy company (such as Fuelcell Energy, etc.) will create a cheap carbon capture method. Or a cheap coal gasification / liquefaction method.

It wasn't because he said "at this point"

Just like when JC Penny CEO said they didn't need to raise equity (because it had already taken place, but it just wasn't announced yet)

He said weeks to a few months.......which I doubt. Maybe Bently just got carried away because the hot news a few days ago was WLT delayed interest payment.

I think if ANR goes bankrupt, it would be at the end of 2016 at the earliest, or the beginning of 2017......because they have cash burn this year + $154 million senior notes due + cash burn in 2016.

Cash burn looks like have gotten worse than a few months ago because CAPP coal and Met coal has not reached its inflection point yet. Price of coal not only needs to recover, but it needs to recover fast enough. Their operations are way out of the money.

So I think a V shaped coal recovery is the only chance that ANR has, anything short of a V shaped recovery, then ANR is in serious danger - what do you think?

  • Alpha Natural Resources - A Stock Of Choice For Risk-Taking, Long-Term Investors [View article]
I've always been bullish on ANR. I liked ANR so much that I previously bought their stock at $3, then took a 45% haircut on my account.

Then I did trading to get my account back up to 100%, and entered ANR again at $0.83/share lol. But their last quarter results were disturbing, so I gave up and sold at $0.79, with only a small speculative position left.

Hopefully last quarter was just a one time thing - because if results like last quarter continues, then I think Bently may be right right. It feels like they may go bankrupt sooner than we think, and might not make it through 2016.

Perhaps the update on their liquidity which they mentioned in their CC can help them extend their time.

  • Walter Energy says "substantial doubt" on continuing as going concern [View news story]
This also doesn't apply to ACI, ANR, and BTU. These companies dug their own graves. Part of it is the shareholders fault too, because they approved it. So the exuberant shareholders at the time are no better than the management.

    @Ask Dad, he knows

Were the gold mining companies leveraged up to their necks back in the 90's when gold was $350 an ounce?

Also, did they use the leverage to acquire a bunch of high cost gold mines that produced at $500 an ounce, while gold was priced at $350? - If there were miners that fit this criteria, did they survive?

  • Alpha Natural Resources: Needs A 20%+ Increase In Metallurgical Coal By 2017 [View article]
Thanks for the clarification. In that case it looks like ANR is definitely in a better position than ACI. Because ACI has the $1.8 bil term loan due in 2018, which makes it senior to everything else, and harder to issue more secured debt.

It doesn't seem like issuing secure debt should have an effect on the equities? Because the equities are in last place anyway, whether the debt is secured or unsecured. But it definitely screws over the unsecured bonds.
