How to Default on Your Mortgage and Stay in Your House
Yes the banks were stupid. But they were not entirely at fault. If the borrowers had been honest, they would have known that A) they couldn't really afford the payments and B) every budget has a limit. This isn't the first housing crunch, and it won't be the last. If the banks are smart, they'll tighten up on credit rules and the slackers won't be able to do this again. But to encourage (or even just suggest) that people should/could walk away from a second mortgage... that is sick. They won't care about the credit rating either. That's the kind of people they are.

Election-Year Jitters Put United and Other Health Plan Stocks on Sale
If the Dems get in (and that's doubtful from my point of view), the only healthcare plans available will be the ones who spend all their profits lobbying congress, and they won't have any money. The rest will bite the dust. This leaves Tommy Taxpayer to foot the bills, even though no one seems to be saying this out loud. Healthcare stocks are losers right now.

Energy Pause Is No Problem for Canadian Trusts
I like HTE, PWE, and PGH, and I even have a bit of AAV, along with a few other oil/natural gas trusts. If I can take these dividends for the next couple years, and maybe longer if they do have the tax increase covered with the pools as they say they do, then why not just keep playing? After all, it's like finding pennies on the ground. It may not mean much to the people who don't see the worth, but for the rest of us, it's money in the bank.

Seven Intriguing Stocks Going Ex-Dividend Next Week
Actually, there are quite a few of those monthly stocks that have a nice dividend yield. Pick up a couple hundred shares, and hold them for a few months, and you'll notice a difference quickly. A few that I like (for price and yield) are HTE, PWE, and CRT. I considered buying and selling frequently to take advantage of price drops and price increases, but those dividends just keep on coming. The other advantage is that these three are in the energy area, and doing just fine. I keep adding instead of selling!

Dues-Paying Homeowners Stuck in Foreclosure Mess Too - Housing Tracker
Thank you, bill d. I always wondered why I was the only one asking those questions. I'm not sure where we're really going yet with this election, but I think we've seen the last of UP for a while. I wonder who they think is going to be paying for everything?

Hedging Your Bet With American Capital Strategies
I've been in with ACAS for several months now, and as it went down, I bought a little more. I even bought some for my kids, and then wondered if I was going to have to apologize later... but so far I'm not disappointed. I like this one.

      Is Oil Bubbling Over?
So, Mmarrkk, if the "(not so) Big 3" built them once, they have the means to do it again, relatively quickly. No designers needed, just a bit of retooling (which my company would gladly help them with), and they could do it. So why aren't they? Because they don't want to admit they were wrong... or maybe because everyone fell for the bigger is better theory. I had a Plymouth Colt, it was okay. I had a little bitty Geo, too. Loved it! But now, I'm aiming for a Mini Cooper because I like getting better than 35 mpg. (My Toyota gets about 34 in the city now, not a hybrid.) I just grin when I see the difference between my gas costs and theirs. I invest the difference in energy stocks for now and collect the dividends.

Protect Your Portfolio from the Fraudulent Economy
I don't know if the sky is falling, or if the economy is going further down the tubes. I DO know that fully half the crunch problem was in the people taking out mortgages they either knowingly couldn't afford or knowingly did not read the contracts or purposely did not take the contract to a lawyer for advice. We can try to blame the banks for ALL of the problem, but 98% of the people were and are paying their bills on time, so maybe it isn't as bad as the media want us to believe. Maybe the market is showing us NOW that it is tired of the media hype and it wants to buy.

Consumers, Politicians, and Economists at Odds Over Gas Tax
A summer savings on the gas tax ($0.18/gallon) would save my (in my little TOYOTA) about $1.80 every two weeks. Ten weeks gets me about $9.00, which might buy me one breakfast out. That is not nearly enough for me to be concerned about. I don't care who is for it or against it politically, but it's not worth this much effort or discussion.

I've got HTE, ERF & PWE, plus a couple other nice energy stocks, and I'm really happy to see them in the positive when so many other stocks are negative these days. Finally I'm gaining ground again.
