  • Cramer's Mad Money - The Obama-Proof IPO (9/23/09) [View article]
Obama-proof... will ANYTHING prove to be Obama-proof? And if we really believe there is something Obama-proof, are we fooling ourselves?

If the REIT market comes back by 20% and everyone shorts it, we know what that will do. It will scare off all the new investors and appear to be a failure at a turnaround. That's what is happening in everything else right now. Everyone wants their quick dollar and no one is really interested in investing in companies. The only advantage I can see is that the prices will drop again and those of us out there to buy a good product and hang on will again get good prices and a much better return in the end.

  • Dividend Paying Stocks: You Only Have to Be Lucky Once [View article]
    Read this today: www.schaeffersresearch...

Funny how the stock price goes down on the day that FRO pays dividends... must be a BAD stock, right? Shame on them for paying dividends...! Or maybe they just didn't get all their facts straight.

Years ago, banks would pay 4% interest on an ordinary savings account. A lot of people saved money, most of them survivors of the Depression and their children. Now, banks pay very little interest on an ordinary savings account, preferring to keep the higher interest rates on CDs and adding penalties to cash them in early. Because of that strategy, I keep a small amount of money in a savings account for availability, a small amount in CDs for emergency, and put the rest of my money in dividend stocks. I prefer higher yield stocks, but want stocks that are strong. Even with the latest drops in share price, the oil stocks and tanker stocks have come through, providing an incentive to buy more. If I sell today, I lose money because the share prices have gone down. But since I don't have to sell, since I have some available cash and some emergency money, I can afford to wait it out, and collect dividends as I wait. When this cycle turns around as it must, I will be ahead of the game without having to spend nearly as much as if I'd bought Google.

My father's strategy was to keep his money in lower dividend stable stocks, like JPM, and funds that paid a low dividend. For him, that was saving like the bank savings accounts of long ago. It worked, but those stocks have gone down just as much as all the rest. Not a bad strategy, but the dividends were half (or less) those of the higher yielding stocks like FRO.

I'm with you. Bring on those dividends.

User 118015 sounds like another analyst. They should all be shot. The market tries to come back all by itself, and another analyst cries, and the weaker set sells again. Silly fools. They sell, price goes down, we buy.

I like Jags, but I'd rather have a minicooper. And I don't personally care where they're built. TaTa's are cute too. And until I get one or the other, I'll just have to watch this music tax thing...
