Assessing BDCs' Rise from the Grave [View article]
One other point - ACAS has brought back their dividend. It will be the only one this year, and is slated to be 90% stock, 10% cash, but the $1.07 dividend is still greater than zero. I'm sure that you already knew that, but I don't know why you didn't mention it. I wonder if it will be the undoing of ACAS, in the end.

I keep a small portion of my portfolio set aside for "risky stocks", the ones I would like to dream will make money. Some have, over the years, and some have not. So far, I'm slightly ahead, and so will take a peek at some of these. I don't gamble more than I can afford to lose, and have been known to tip more in a month than I put into risky stocks, but watching the ones that go up provides that touch of excitement that makes me know I'm not dead yet.
The 'Sell After Dividend Cut/Freeze' Rule, With Exceptions [View article]
As a dividend lover, but a relative newbie, I appreciate the insight in the article as well as most of the comments. (I choose not to pick my stocks based on political reasons.) I have some stocks that fluctuate with a variety of things, i.e., oil-based stocks that change based on the price of oil, energy stocks that vary frequently, etc. Some, over the years, have low periods and high periods. I've kept those, because they did have such nice payouts in 2008, and are still paying, but slightly lower. Some, gradually, are coming up again.
I will watch for some of the things you've discussed, and make my decisions based on a combination of my logic and yours. My choice may not change, but at least I'm considering the options.

I used to fret over my portfolio, worrying this or that type of investment until it was just the way I wanted it. When the financials crunched, I invested in oil stocks and did okay - not great but okay. Somewhere along the line, maybe a bad year, ACAS got left behind and then it was so low in value that to sell it would get me too little to put into anything else. So I left it, assuming that if it didn't go bankrupt, I would just wait and see. I really liked this one, because it was doing such nice things for my portfolio for so long, so I guess I'll just have to stick it out a little longer. This latest jump made me wish I'd been a little braver, made me wish I'd picked up some of that really cheap stock, but there's still time. And I'm still watching.

Valuation on everything has tanked, which proves one thing to me - everyone is listening to the analysts and no one is looking at the companies. If all the analysts (ALL) were forced to shut up for one month, people would have to do their own research. They would end up buying stock in the companies they believe are good. The market would go up based on how people feel rather than how analysts feel. This could have the effect of stabilizing some of those companies. Do I know which companies are good? No. Do I listen to the analysts anymore? No. I read them, agree or disagree, and end up buying on my own opinions of those companies or selling for the same reasons. We've all lost value in our investments, anyway. Why not just fire the analysts and go it alone?

I'm with notsosmart, FRO is a winner. Even if the supply of oil/nat gas is decreasing, it isn't going to deplete itself overnight and we still don't have a better way to get it here. As long as Nancy Pelosi plays her games, I will stick with FRO. After all, if oil and the transportation of it from "there to here" is her game plan, I might as well make money off it. Go, Nancy.

Chicago Mike, if you had held onto your Bank One, you would have JPM now, which doesn't have the nice dividend yield, but it has been able to weather this crunch a little easier than the rest. ACAS is one I like also, better than JPM, but not so much that I would dump all my JPM... just some. I like the security JPM gives me.

I've been in with ACAS for several months now, and as it went down, I bought a little more. I even bought some for my kids, and then wondered if I was going to have to apologize later... but so far I'm not disappointed. I like this one.
