  • An FDA advisory panel starts a two-day meeting to discuss Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK +0.4%) former blockbuster diabetes pill whose sales plummeted after the agency said in 2010 that it could only be used only in rare cases due to fears that it caused heart attacks. The options are to remove, modify or leave Avandia's safety restrictions in place, or withdraw the drug entirely. However, even if the FDA eases those restrictions, sales of Avandia aren't expected to significantly increase. (Webcast[View news story]
It's always great to hear that the companies you invest in have committed healthcare fraud in a big way.

  • Hercules Technology Growth Capital (HTGC) is initiated a Buy with $16.50 price target at Wunderlich. The company's been a standout in the BDC sector, up 21.5% YTD and showing little ill-effect from the broader selloff hitting the group of late. [View news story]
That's a pretty nice price target.

I'm going to have to study up on how one puts a price target on a BDC.

It seems like some form of black magic is required.

  • India's cabinet has authorized a proposal to start a non-binding conciliation process with Vodafone (VOD) over a $2.2B tax bill related to the company's acquisition of a unit of Hutchison Whampoa in 2007. While Vodafone disputes that it owes the money, it has in the past expressed willingness to reach a settlement that doesn't include interest. The outcome of the row could affect at least four other cases, including one involving AT&T. [View news story]
    This sounds encouraging.

  • B. Riley upgrades Joe's Jeans (JOEZ) to Buy, price target $2.15. [View news story]
This is great news, but JOEZ performance has nothing to do with what analysts think.

I love JOEZ, but I watch it like a hawk.

Oh yeah, it's my high flyinest stock.

  • More from Gundlach: He doesn’t own any mortgage REITs now, and mREIT investors should "brace yourself for continued volatility," but he would buy Annaly (NLY) at $12. NLY is well-run but he sees the dividend going down, though not so much "you feel a lot of pain. I don’t think you’re going to see the dividend yield drop from 13% to below 6%, so if 6% is OK with you, then you’re fine.” (earlier: I, II, III, IV[View news story]

I can't just take this news in stride. This makes my day.

Just two years ago I started managing my retirement money and was blissfully unaware that dividend increases are a highly desirable thing.

    Now, I'm hooked.

And if my figuring is correct, the buyback is 10% of the float.

    This is from the PR...

The Board also renewed the Companys Share Repurchase Program, authorizing the purchase of 110 million shares over time. This Board action replaces the remainder of the June 2012 authorization. As of May 31, 2013, there were approximately 63 million shares remaining under the prior authorization, and the Company had approximately one billion common shares outstanding.

What does "over time" mean usually?

LAZ is one of my favs.

I don't read much about it. The stock keeps going up and they pay a good dividend.

I intend to read Cohan's book "The Last Tycoons" (about Lazard).

I read "Money and Power" (about Goldman Sachs) and it was great. You're welcome William.

  • Business development companies (BDCS -1.1%) see some selling as higher interest rates threaten to offer at least minor competition to their fat dividends. The drop in junk bond prices - a decent proxy for the assets on their books - isn't helping either. Leading on the downside today: Main Street (MAIN -4.5%), American Capital (ACAS -2.4%), Prospect Capital (PSEC -1.4%), Ares Capital (ARCC -1.1%), Blackrock Kelso (BKCC -1.1%). [View news story]
