I am a complete newbie to investing at 60 yrs old. I am a public employee for the State of California for nearly 40 years. Presently I work in the unemployment division making decesions of eligibilty on unemployment claims.( Job security right?) I do the investigation and issue a written legal decsion to the parties, claimant, employers etc.It has been an interesting career especailly the last 4-5 years. I have now been thorougly introduced to the concept of overtime! Came to Seeking Alpha via a google search and found one of David Crosetti's articles "Investing for Do It Yourselfers" as I remember. I have been reading about investing for a year. As our parents are getting older and needing care I became ...More acutely aware of the need for some long term care insurance. After doing some inquiry and learning how expensive it is and making the connection that I had money in my 401k I decided to try and invest to meet this potential need. If not needed then the monies could pass to my kids. Education BA degree in Social Science from Cal State Stanislaus. (affectionetly known a Turkey Tech). Started out to be a teacher until I realized there were kids in the classrooms!
Eagle Scout; Founder of troop 194 that has produced about 50 Eagle Scouts in the last 20 years.I have two Great Nephews in the troop! Vigil Honor Order of the Arrow/ Delware Name given me by the Lodge translates into Noisy Bear. I snored alot!! Silver Beaver. (if you are a Scout all this makes sense)
Trying to use good judgement in making my investments. Seeking Alpha has been an inexhaustable resource for me on this journey. Wish I had learned of Dividend Growth investing at a much younger age. I am allowed to invest virtually all my 401k monies as a self directed account. With that said happy investing! First rule of my business plan is : No Hubris allowed!
Hobbies: gardening, playing the Native American Flute, Reading, and now Investing. Fortunate to study with two time Grammy winner Mary Youngblood on the flute. I facilitate my local Flute Circle and have written extensively for our publication ,"Voice of the Wind" Live in the Great Central Valley of California ...yes my Mom's family were Okies.
