"a decline in defense stocks was an overreaction to issues unrelated to the sector"

Both ITA and PPA have underperformed the S&P 500 this year...they've been terrible etf's to own in 2008.

We aren't going to run out of oil, Kunst...we may however run out of cheap/easily extracted oil. Shale, tar sand,etc...there's more than enough for our lifetimes and beyond...it's just expensive to get to with technology as it is right now.

I agree with you though, a breakthrough would be very welcome.

How about Word vs. Wordperfect, Excel vs. Lotus 1-2-3, Windows vs. MacOS, Visual Studio vs. Borland, and Netscape vs. Internet Explorer? The track record may not be flawless, but having a better product doesn't mean the company is in zero danger. The possibility of a takeover helps but I'm not convinced it's enough to count as a built-in insurance policy.

Microsoft released under Ballmer (and had success with) the Xbox, the Xbox 360, Windows XP, and Vista. I don't quite remember when they bought Bungie...if that was when Ballmer was President or when he was CEO, but certainly that turned out to be a great investment. Windows Media DRM looks like it will dominate that space as well.
