Why 'Buy American' Hurts America

If we want to develop a true high-speed rail network, all of the equipment purchases will need to be made from Japan, Germany or France. We gave up on rail a long time ago and fell off the charts technologically. The same with tunneling. Americans forget that there is a 33-mile tunnel system linking England and France. How did that happen? Switzerland just opened a 26 mile high-speed rail tunnel (parallel to older regular tunnel that was built about 100 years ago and was better than anything built here). But ask NY and NJ transit officials to build a new tunnel across the Hudson (about a mile and half) they say it will take 10 or more years. Put Japanese and/or European engineers in charge and it will take about an afternoon.
Americans are locked into a September 1945 mentality...they think no one is better...but they are so far into decline they have no idea...this kind of thing was the subject of several episodes in the original Star Trek series. Kirk and company would come across a more primitive civilization who thought they were advanced until Kirk et al showed them otherwise!
