On Buying Silver Because Of The Gold To Silver Ratio [View article]
Abundance in earth's crust is not very helpful for investment purposes. Platinum's abundance in the earth's crust is 0.003ppm (more abundant than gold), but production of platinum in 2011 was 192 tonnes vs gold's 2700 tonnes. Silver had a production in 2011 of 23,800 tonnes. How much of that silver went to industrial use, never to be recovered? Half? What is the ratio of gold/silver produced when you take into consideration industrial use. The graph you cite clearly has the gold/silver price ratio headed down. Your thesis is shaky. Ignore historical gold/silver ratios at your own risk.
Silver is a double edged sword (money/industrial uses) and these are unusual times with unusual central fiscal stimuli. It remains to be seen whether the present inflation and coming inflation is similar to past inflations. I doubt it. I also doubt that energy/oil prices are going to decrease much. What about the combination of increasing energy costs and increasing fiat monetary base? I'm going to go out on a limb and predict silver will do just fine.
