  • Is Saudi Arabia Targeting U.S. Shales? [View article]
The Saudis are not after any particular oil producers. They have simply realized that their past efforts to stabilize markets served to reduce risk for marginal production or marginal alternatives. Its economics. They have the balance sheet to weather any storm. They are acting in their own self interest.

  • Exact Sciences' Potential Competitor [View article]

Thanks for the important update. Checking the Colomarker website, I did not see where the test can detect precancerous polyps.

  • Rising Competition Makes Cree A Risky Investment [View article]
A year ago my local Home Depot was mostly Cree LEDs. Now it is almost all Phillips at a lower price than Cree. Nobody who shops at Walmart pays $10 for a light bulb.

  • Apple's Desperate Moves Won't Save It From Stale Product Lines [View article]
It is really simple if we just follow the money. FY 13 R&D expense over 4 Billion. Q2 14 on a pace for 5 Billion. They all ought to be fired if they are not working on some big things with this kind of cash.

  • Recent ADP job gains revised lower, but others pushed higher [View news story]
As other commenters have noted I don't understand the revisions to the ADP numbers. The detailed spec for this number says nothing about revisions, but it does say the raw input is payrolls processed by ADP. It also says that the goal of their data massage is to accurately predict the final BLS number. I would think that ADP would have a pretty good idea how many payroll checks they processed in a month, but maybe not.

  • Verizon: An Undervalued Stock [View article]
Have you looked at the effect of the developing price war will have? With the big pile of new debt do they have the B/S to hack it?

  • Farmers appeal complaints about Monsanto to Supreme Court [View news story]
The group of farmers et al. does not appear to have filed a petition yet. A district court and an appeals court have found that they do not have a cause to sue in that Monsanto has said that it will not sue farmers over inadvertent use of the technology. That would cover the pollen from the neighbor. Apparently, the contamination issue was not a part of this case.

Just back in May SCOTUS affirmed Monsanto's patent rights over Roundup Ready soy beans wherein a farmer tried to grow his own seed crop.

IMHO the court will not take this case.

  • My Good-Yielding Dividend Growth Portfolio [View article]
Very interesting analysis. You will get dividend increases out of this portfolio, but you have selected for companies that tend to hoard their cash. These guys dole it out to shareholders in pinches.
As an example of cash hoarding let's dive into XOM. Their debt is low, but you need to add back almost $10B of worldwide pension underfunding. Their US plans are funded at only 79%. This is better than they were years ago, but why do they suffer the extra PBGC fees. They seem to be motivated by something other than maximizing shareholder returns.
