  • West Coast flights out of La Guardia a possibility [View news story]
Yea, AAL has been giving me heartburn lately. It is hyper sensitive to any upward move in oil, and nonchalant over any dips. Even though oil is still 50% off last year, there's an expectation it will jump back up quickly. I've read a number of articles over the past 8 weeks along the lines of "Oil just went parabolic!" No, no it didn't.

  • Squllier's Declaration Sheds Light On Bankruptcy Details For GT Advanced Technologies [View article]
Honestly, the power issue sounds like an excuse to me. It is a solvable technical issue. The three month delay surely hurt, but 3 lost batches isn't a business killer (on the contrary, such things should be expected).

So I'd label it more of a "contributing factor" than "root cause."

  • GT Advanced Technologies: What Went Wrong And What Investors Need To Know About The Bankruptcy Process [View article]
Turns out, the sapphire was a bust, Hyperion does not cure cancer, and GTAT will miss SA's $87.50 price target. Who could have guessed?

  • Apple roundup: GT Advanced, iOS 8, 12.9" iPad, iPhone 6 [View news story]
The Kyocery phone is nearly twice as thick as the the iPhone 6 (13.2 mm vs 7.1 mm). The other dimensions are nearly the same, but the Kyocera weighs 2 oz more. Sapphire can work in a phone, if you are willing to carry around a brick. Apple/GTAT hit the wall trying to thin it down.

  • GT Advanced, What Happened? Reading Between The Lines On Its Bankruptcy [View article]
AAPL is one of the most secretive companies around. GTAT is guaranteed to be bound by a draconian NDA, thus the lack of information.

This is the problem with fundamental analysis by non-experts. The hype train put the cart way before the horse in terms of the engineering.

There's only so much monetary policy can do. Life is even more difficult when you have fiscal policy moving in the opposite direction.
