SK Hynix confirms what Mu execs have been saying as to supply
    http://bit.ly/1oBt0g4

"SK Hynix President Kim Joon-ho told analysts that the problem was a change in product mix and a transition to more complex production technology will crimp third-quarter shipments growth for the key DRAM business. Analysts are concerned that DRAM shipments growth will be increasingly limited in the latter half of the year, given the technology migration issues, which would lead to slower top-line growth. But Hong said such concerns were overblown, as limited shipments growth would help keep supply tight and support chip prices."

  • Question On Micron's Pullback: Would Samsung Actually Want To Help Apple? [View article]
Key line in transcript: " ... a few comments on the outlook for the rest of 2014. We expect the memory business earnings growth momentum to continue, with a strong demand coupled with limited supply growth, which will result in a tight market supply and demand condition."
So until(if) the extra supply comes on line, Samsung projects a strong market for memory thru 2014. Why was this comment overlooked by wall street??
But I should thank them for an entry point into MU.

Samsung 840 / 840 EVO susceptible to flash read speed degradation over time

There are issues with Samsung's TLC nand ssd's. Seems that MU's strategy in using SLC and MLC in the M600 and waiting til the TLC bugs are worked out is a good one.

MU Micron checks show stonger than expected DDR4 demand, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray says its recent channel checks indicate that stronger than expected demand for DDR4 is not specific to Samsung. Piper thinks 20% of Micron's DRAM bits could be DDR4 by the second half of 2015, which it believes could drive 10c-15c of earnings upside to its current estimates. The firm remains positive on Micron shares with an Overweight rating and $43 price target.

"The bit-growth rate of DRAM chips for desktops will grow the highest at 12.7% on year in 2014,"
they are talking about the 'growth rate' slowing , not a drop in dram demand, funny how one can look at this and make it a negative

  • Micron Vs. SanDisk And The 'Big Data' Explosion Effect [View article]
First off, the amount of misinformation in these articles is amazing. Wonder if anyone actually reads them or just reacts to key words - "oversupply" said over and over again somehow makes it true. Samsung originally said it would migrate a mfg. line to dram with output beginning in 2q15, from 7 to 10 mos away. Lot of money to be made in that time at MU.
Second the algorithms that drive the computer trading pick up on certain and key words and automatically buy or sell, sell in this case.
Also I am sure there are many more possible reasons beyond my limited knowledge.
And who knows there may be some truth in the oversupply theory, I am not in the industry or by any means an expert, but then why would MU continue to state that they are sold out and supply constrained.
However, It looks like manipulation to me, combined with the time of year, profit taking, etc.

Thank you Justin for an excellent article and for writing so that non-techies can understand the issues.
I do have to agree with TA tho: AMD could have prevented the problem with adequate quality control. With the competition so fierce they cant continue to make mistakes like this.
