No worries, I can take the attacks. What I can't understand is the comments from certain individuals who post things that are factually incorrect due to some weird emotional attachment to one company or another. Like those who look at a price elasticity play and immediately trash RIM's margins not understanding the model. Substantive conversation would be nice instead of the apple fans (of which I count myself one with an iphone, mb air, imac, appletv, iopods, etc, etc) that many times just are in attack mode off the bat without any fundamental understanding of the situation.

jmmx - are you an apple fan by any chance? verizon is subsidizing the handset to lock in the data plan (you have to have an email plan to qualify - comes right off their site - so your friend must have some kind of data plan to get the bogo offer) RIM gets a profitable handset sale PLUS the two years of service revenue kickbacks from verizon at 80% margins ($4-5 gross per month or another $100 over the contract).

so, you're wrong about the bogo offer and you're wrong about the margin. perhaps you should pursue the age old adage that you'd rather have people believe you to be a fool and remain silent than open your mouth and remove all doubt?

and by the way, i have a bold (and a curve, and a javelin, and a storm, and an 8700, and a 7130) and an iphone and you are correct that safari rocks, but the bold browser is quite capable. this is just my opinion though. no doubt i'll get blasted by an apple fan.

of course the apple fans have to come out in full force. i love the lack of understanding from apple lovers worried about RIM and Verizon and their strategy to use simple price elasticity to drive adoption. isn't the smartphone game in a land grab/adoption phase? so perhaps it might be smart for rim and carriers to pursue this strategy.

Nonsense above blasts the author, yet doesn't understand the economics of the "giveaways" to RIM's model. I guess he doesn't understand that verizon is subsidizing the phone, while they pick up a 2 year contract with data attached (arpu increases!) and RIM picks up a profitable handset sale plus the service revenues for 2 years (at 80% margins). yeah, that's a reason to blast the author, mr. nonsense! (btw, you come off as a jerk)

RIM will do just fine. these apple fans seem to actually believe every single person wants or likes an iphone. this is just not the case, and they get indignant, almost vitriolic, when someone writes anything to this effect (don't dare write a positive article about a competitor because you'll have to watch your back it seems). Joel has had some long and thoughtful posts on many subjects but for that first poster to blast him is ludacris, especially when the poster is wrong about this promotion having a significant deleterious effect on margins. just classic the levels of stupidity that are demonstrated when emotions take over. seems to happen often in the apple reality distortion field.

@Rigged - Very simply, if there is any equity value in the entity, the SENIOR bonds can not get crammed down in any way. That is the way a capital structure works. You are assuming the equity is gone which may not be the case if it's a liquidity filing (i.e. can't refinance or secure properties). I can swim just fine in the deep end, why don't you take your obnoxious comments elsewhere.

This article makes one believe that the only way to invest in REITs is through the common stock. Some very smart investors have been buying the senior unsecured debt of REITs at depression like valuations that already embed these terrible assumptions. If you're right, you get a great return, if you're wrong you have a free run to the assets once the secured debt holders take their properties. Sounds like a good bet if you can find REITs that are 1. lowly levered and 2. are mostly financed by senior unsecured debt and not through secured mortgages. When you own the debt and they can't refinance, you end up with ownership of the assets on an unlevered basis (i.e. in a workout the debt holders get equity and you end up with many properties that have zero debt on them.) But this article is about a conspiracy theory...not how to properly invest in REITs in difficult and uncertain times.

look at Duke Realty and Brandywine today out raising money (highly dilutive, but raising nonetheless!). Simon, and even Prologis raised money already (expensive debt and dilutive equity). I've been buying the senior debt of these REITs for a few months at just ridiculous levels. This is where the action is. Forget the cushion....I mean, equity. You're better off in the senior unsecured where there is no or little bank debt or secured financing ahead of you.

and of course only software matters and not air interface/data transmission technologies. while apple can write some serious code they don't understand yet the scarcities involved in mobile. their devices end up using so much bandwidth that carriers need to upgrade and upgrade. look at att's capex plans ahead of iphone launch in june. meanwhile rim approaches everything from an efficiency standpoint and compresses data that moves over the network. this gives them an advantage when it comes to carrier incentives. regardless of the nonsense written here, the macro picture means there will be plenty of business for multiple smartphone vendors for the next few years so it is quite possible both rim and apple can coexist and prosper simultaneously. (ps. don't tell that to any of the apple fans here, they won't believe it)

and remember the best technology does not always equal the most mkt share. many factors affect ultimate end sales.

Wow! This is one of the funniest posts I have ever read. RIM has lost to microsoft is a hilarious statement. The actual numbers just don't bear this out. Obviously you have no idea what you are talking about. There are a number of cheap hosted blackberry services that require zero investment upfront. To actually believe that activesync protocol is better than BES is telling. And the statement about BIS and "lack of history" is laughable. They've been at it for a number of years on BIS and it has been very reliable over time. I think you might want to substitute "novi" with "jer". please tell me you don't actually believe what you wrote below.

apple fanatics out in full force as usual. this article is a bad joke that tells me nothing. the double standard that iphanatics apply is hilarious. it's ok for apple to start slow and then evolve their products/platform, but not their competitors. you really think rim has no plans to offer credit card payments or carrier channel payments? let it evolve. in the end the appstore thing will not be THE differentiator anyway for the masses - it's just on epiece of a larger puzzle you have to have to compete as a smartphone platform.
