  • T-Mobile Has Vulnerable Verizon In Its Sights With A Price War For Users [View article]
I plan to switch (from AT&T) to T-Mobile simply because I detest duopoly and the customer-unfriendly corporate arrogance that accompanies it. [Disclosure: long T, just sold VOD].

  • General Electric's Dividend Is In A Golden Age [View article]
You can not judge a company by the amount of revenue it generates or by the amount of earnings. Judge profitability by return on invested capital (ROIC). GE's ROIC is a pathetic 0.83% per Morningstar.

Regarding VTR, consider this as a possible motivation for the sell off and valuation: http://on.mktw.net/18f...

This is the best article I have ever read on SA. It absolutely deserves an editor's choice award. Thank you for your tremendous effort.

  • Looking For Value In Southern Company [View article]
The mature TransAlta generating plant west of Edmunton has an on-site coal mine. No innovativation attributable to that. No compelling investment thesis for TransAlta either.

  • Silicon Motion: Significant Catalyst Ahead, Estimates Simply Too Low [View article]
Excellent response, Phillip. And not only did we get a "very rude awakening", we were also apparently the last to be informed. But such is the nature of foreign small caps. I never moved beyond what was intended to be a starting position, a trivial 200 shares, purchased for $14.50 on 1/7/13. I've clung to it almost as an experiment, and because I have plenty of cash to fund other ideas. But I view a SIMO position more like gambling than investing. I think Ashraf, whom I follow (that's a compliment) may be getting too enamored with the "alpha-rich" promotion. BTW, if someone rejects the EMH, then they should reject MPT; then beta has limited significance, and consequently so does alpha!

  • What's Your (Dividend Growth) Number? [View article]
It is difficult to find 6 utilities worth owning at this time. If you own a basket of 32, the quality of the overall collection is diminished. Diversification is not risk reduction if it diminishes quality. That is particularly true within a sector where all companies share some sector-related risks.

  • Microgrids Don't Have To Be A Death Knell For Electric Utilities [View article]
I would like to know who the industry executives are that are calling microgrids a "mortal threat" to their business. Then I can insure that I will never invest in the corporations they run.

  • The Dividend Investors' Guide To Successful Investing - A New Beginning [View article]
Welcome back Mark, it is good to hear from you again! I feel that I owe you; you helped me get interested in options investing and it has been a successful adjunct to my dividend growth investing. Regarding social media: be good, the NSA now closely tracks you along with the rest of that crowd :-).

  • Consider Norfolk Southern On 8% Earnings Yield And 2.7% Dividend [View article]
I agree! CSX is the closest peer to NSC and it was lax not to include it in the comparison.

  • This Stock Can Power The Dow Jones Transports Higher [View article]
I would love to see Chuck Carnevale comment on CHRW as a means of contrasting his valuation methods with the heuristic approach used here. It might give me an added inducement to subscribe to fastgraph.

  • The Hedgeye Insight On Gathering Systems [View article]
I love market stupidity. I sold enough October 35 KMI puts and December 32.50 KMI puts to make it my third largest holding if assigned. I DARE the market to assign me the shares at those prices. The effective cost would be way below what Rich Kinder recently paid on the open market. And we all know what a fool he is :-). P.S. he is not! If not assigned I will just enjoy the generous put premium (~22% ATR on the October put.)

  • New York Post Rumors, The Dark Side And The FOMC [View article]
I didn't grasp the "Prison within a Store" concept for J.C. Penney, but if Martha Stewart commits another greedy error, it might have some utility (if Macy's doesn't object).

Summer rally?? But someone said we were supposed to sell in May and go away. Is there a new poetic line?
