  • Jim Rogers' Picks and Pans - Barron's Interview [View article]
It would be helpful for everyone to remember that Jim Rogers does not claim to be a trader, a person involved in shorter-term market strategies. He looks at things with a years-long viewpoint.

  • Ultra and Inverse ETFs: The Downside of Doubling Up  [View article]
I have a slight problem with the basic premise of the article contained in this statement: "Before the advent of inverse ETFs and ETNs, the only way an investor could profit from a decline in the price of a security was by opening a margin account with a broker and borrowing the shares."

This is why there's options. And, specifically, puts.

  • How Commodity Prices Are Hurting Global Economies [View article]
"Commodities seem to be on a bull run which is inversely related to the overall economy."

Your premise is that commodities are not a component of the overall economy. However, commodities are part of the economy, the basic materials from which everything is built. If you mean commodity values are inversely related to stock valuations or mean to address currency fluctuations, it would help to be address those issues directly. A pricing variation in materials is not an external force upon the rest of the world.

  • Friday Outlook: Watching Paint Dry [View article]
Here in suburban Georgia local sales tax revenues for the prior month were down 31%.

As to the point about portfolio managers reporting losses for the quarter, it might be better to take as much of that now as is reasonable to make next quarter's returns look better.

    We're in a 50/50 situation for today.

  • Thursday Outlook: Where's the Big Fall? [View article]
The primary difference between 1998 and today is the approach the Fed is taking to handling the markets. Currently the moves seem to be an attempt to moderate the overall rate of change.

You ask what big time idiots would buy?
    Plunge Protection Team
Not that I'd call them idiots, myself. Don't take that to mean I agree with their policies but they have different goals than I do.

  • Don't Get Caught in the Dot Commodity Bubble [View article]
Are commodities markets more volatile than stock markets? It's the commonly-stated position but are they really?

  • Commodities Bubble Needs to Burst [View article]
    daffy,

It's true every country, specifically the rapidly developing ones, need supplies of all the commodities. Bear in mind, however, that their need did not develop over the past few months. While there are sound fundamental reasons to support higher commodity prices now than a few months ago, I cannot recall any market capable of supporting a parabolic price increase for long.

  • Amazon Appears Reasonably Priced [View article]
Your valuation is so highly dependent on your assumptions that the result might as well have been a guess. It would be pleasant to see AMZN grow at 26% per year from here.

  • Which of the 6 Agriculture ETFs is Best? [View article]
An interesting title but hardly correct. Perhaps "An Overview of the Ag ETFs/ETNs" would be more appropriate.

  • Which Commodities Work Now? [View article]
Just for reference, someone interested in a way to invest in soft commodities might look at RJA. It's an ETN that's based on the agricultural portion of the Rogers commodity index. Similarly, RJZ is for metals, RJN is for energy, and RJI tracks the full index.
