      Thank Goodness for Friday
I am not really keen on comparing with Japan. US is a different animal that lets its idol fall. US doesn't have that "save the face" problem. That helps to clean up the problems.

      Vouchers Against Forclosures?
      1) There is no possible way to bail out bad decision makers without penalizing those who stood within their means.
      2) Why do you absolutely want to avoid a recession? What is the problem with that? Do all American have a birthright to an SUV, flat screen TV and what else? And all this at the expense of the public.
      3) If there is another stimulus package why should only those irrational home buyers profit of it?
      4) Do not bail out homeowners because there is another category that will soon come out of the woods; the savers. A lot of savers are currently losing cash above former FDIC limits, 401 Ks are down the drain with private taxed securities accounts. This a latent drama. These people are not losing something they never owned (like subprime borrowers) but something they worked hard for. Their decisions were also rational on a ex ante basis given the propaganda surrounding the stock markets. If these people withdraw from the markets they'll never come back.

Lessons From Past Bear Market Bottoms
About margins; the week before last, when my options portfolio was already down a good 30% to $36K my broker gave me a day trading limit of $75K!
I didn't use it. Last Thursday they cancelled the limit when the portfolio dropped below $ 25K. If I would have been on margin at that time, hoping to recuperate my losses, I would have had to sell everything.
I think that trading on margin has increased and margin calls are cause for some of the wide swings we have seen the past weeks.

Home Ownership: The Ideal That Refuses to Die
Home ownership should be encouraged. We have some renters now in the houses where I live and it is not the same level of commitment.
However, home ownership is not a goal in itself and should not be shoved into people for ideological reasons.

Short Selling Ban Sends Chills Through Options Market
Good article. Past weeks have been really messy. Spreads were way to high and no volumes at all on smaller stocks. I have ALD 15 calls January and could not unload them even when the stock went above the strike, such a long time ago it seems.
