I wondered the same thing. Would like to know why retired investors were specifically called out in the title.

  • Gilead Faces Big Issues With AIDS Vaccine [View article]
Looking at this from a humanity standpoint as opposed to an investment opportunity, I think the approval of this drug as a preventative measure makes it a sad day for humanity. I agree that HIV infections will go up. Despite warnings that it reduces (*not* eliminates) risk of HIV infection, people will feel invincible and have unprotected sex.

I can't see any successful lawsuits against GILD though. Like I mentioned, I'm sure the fine print will be very clear that risk is reduced, not eliminated... even if it's taken exactly as prescribed.

  • Nokia Lumia Is No Apple iPhone Killer [View article]
Remember when XBox came out? "They" said it couldn't compete with Sony and Nintendo. Now look where XBox is, granted it didn't happen overnight, but neither will Windows Phone/Nokia success.

  • Bank of America to charge $5 debit card fee [View article]
They're raising fees to drive away unprofitable customers. A few weeks ago I was charged $1 for "excessive activity" on my account. That excessive activity amounted to 4 transactions in my savings account. (wtf!?). I emailed them and told them I don't pay bank fees and if they didn't reverse the fee I'd close my account. They replie back "We can't do that." so I closed my account. I *so* wanted them to ask my why I was closing my account, but they simply didn't care. They were glad to be rid of me!

  • Shares of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A -1.9%) are down modestly after Standard & Poor's affirms its AA+ rating on the insurer but revises its outlook to negative from stable, citing Berkshire's exposure to U.S. Treasury and agency securities.  [View news story]
Retaliation for Buffet's harsh comments on S&P downgrade of US debt.

  • House Majority Leader Eric Cantor says it's time for Americans to "come to grips with the fact that promises have been made that frankly are not going to be kept for many," and young people must "adjust" to a future with fewer entitlements. • Radient Pharmaceuticals: Betting on Bullish Earnings and Positive Study Results [View article]
Here's my concern. The testing at the Mayo Clinic has been going on for quite some time. By now, they MUST have preliminary results and there are those in the know of what these results are. What I'm getting at is this... people trade based on inside information. Why isn't this stock going up based on this insider info, if the news is good?

  • Roger Ibbotson, who's long favored equities' long-term returns over bonds, has a new "theory of everything" that has him advising two new mutual funds: Buy low liquidity. He says stocks with the lowest 25% of trading volume return 2.5%-8% more than their peers annually.  [View news story]
There's nothing new here. This is just another way to say that microcaps return more than blue chips.

  • This was the third-worst post-Memorial Day in S&P history. On the other seven times it lost more than 1%, S&P was up 6/7 times over the next two days.  [View news story]
What if it rains in Seattle on Memorial Day when the market is down? Can we get that 6/7 to a perfect score on those days? Say 4/4 times? It DID rain in Seattle yesterday afterall.
