The Importance of Stock Picking, Illustrated in Oil
CrossProfit - Agreed, but the author seems to be making a case for picking stocks instead of just buying a sector fund or an ETF. If thats not the case, than what is the point of the article, because the examples he gave are like comparing Exxon to Hasbro.

You do know that VLO is not an "oil" stock, right? It's a gasoline and retailer (gas stations). When the price of oil goes up more than the price of gas, VLO loses. You are comparing apples to oranges. You are making the argument that stock picking matters by comparing two very different companies. If you were to compare two stocks that are positively correlated to the price of oil, you would have more ground to stand on.

Should We Force a Housing Bottom?
I agree with most of this article, but there seems a glaring hole in the analysis. Leverage. Most of the return the average home owner experiences is from buying an asset with a moderate appreciation rate (forget the years leading up to the bubble bursting), with basically a 3 - 20% down payment. Even modest price appreciation translates to a very high return on that down payment.

      E*Trade: Hindsight with Binoculars
Update - not that my account means anything, but I just had a bad customer service experience. My account was missing an item needed to approve it for trading. I got no proactive communication from ETrade. I went to make my first trade and was told to call them.

The customer service manager I spoke to said I should have received one and he was sorry I didn't. My account was just opened, you would think they would get it right for a new customer. The front line customer service guy I spoke to initially was saying they don't usually send out proactive communications, just tell people whats wrong when they call in. I suspect he was right and the manger was just trying to preserve the account.

Anyway, transferring my account to Ameritrade before I have to go through anymore problems. My account is meaningless, but I thought I would tell you my experience.

How Long Until the Housing Market Recovers?
Tell me about it, prices are dropping near the beach, but sooooo slowly. A friend of mine only buys beach property and insisted prices never drop...to which I said BS, but now that I'm trying to buy in a beach city, I'm starting to believe him.

      Carlivar,

We know we could go east to find affordable housing, but those areas don't appreciate as fast or hold their value as well. So my bitching about homes being un-affordable really is my own fault because I refuse to move somewhere where I need to commute to work, friends, family, etc. Beach communities are very expensive, so we are willing to wait, save and hopefully hit a bottom next year to buy. Prices hold their value well where we want to live, so it should be a good investment if and when we finally do buy here.

As for financing cars, believe me, your preaching to the choir, when these cars are paid off, thats it for car payments for us for a long time. I shudder when I think about how much money I've wasted on cars over the years.

Also, since we don't currently own, we don't have a huge mortgage interest deduction so taxes eat us up. 1st time home buyers, even with good incomes are struggling big time right now...at least in areas like So. Cal.

      Voicoff,

Your right, if somehow we could live hyper frugally we could save a ton of cash, but our free cash flow doesn't allow for it. Rent is $1750 per month. Daycare is $1600 per month. Car payments on two 4cyl imports are $750 per month. Add in insurance, food, gas, dry cleaning, etc., etc....leaves very little left over to save for the down payment. We both put 15% into our 401(k)s which we can borrow against to help with the down. The cars will be paid off soon, but reality is to buy in a good neighborhood right now for a 2st time home buyer is very very hard. Prices need to, are and will continue to come down.

Dual income north of $200k with two kids living in So. Cal. We need to come up with about a $100k down payment minimum. Crappy condos in the good neighborhoods here are still $500k+. This market has a ways to go before it becomes anywhere close to affordable for a 1st time home buyer.

Antwillant - I just opened an IRA at ETrade. It could not have been easier. It was even tricky because I work in the securities industry and they needed a letter from my company saying it was ok for me to open the account. The account still got opened in less than a week even though I had to mail a paper application and they needed that permission letter.

Voice - I would love to know what that site is that shows what institutions own what percentage of stocks.

Thanks Voice. In the example you were using with Citigroup, does it show who owns what percentage of the company? For example, if American funds (Capitol Group) owns 10% of the outstanding shares, does it show that somewhere?
