  • Update: Reduced Max Penalty Is Good News For BP [View article]
The fall in oil prices is geopolitical, with the Saudis trying to deepen Iran's economic problems to influence its decision on the nuclear talks. It's doubtful that the relatively small U.S. additional production or the global slowdown has cut the price of oil in half, but they may have contributed somewhat.

I'm not sure the "class settlement" approval, which was pro forma, was a victory.

  • Update: BP Catches Another Legal Break That May Be Bigger Than You Think [View article]
This may not be end of the world, but it is a huge directional change in the litigation and probably saves the dividend. Dividend increases are unlikely, however, until crude prices stabilize at a higher level. Good buying opportunity.

    Long BP

  • ONEOK Increases Dividend 3%, Now Yields Nearly 6% [View article]
Except for uncertainty in the energy sector, its hard to understand the high yield. I would have preferred that management did not spin off its regulated utility business, which in my view added stability.

Not a "rare victory", the only victory. It will probably save the dividend, but in this energy environment I wouldn't expect any dividend increases for a while. But it does make BP a very enticing play on the entire sector, similar to a long term call option with a generous yield.

    Long BP.

  • Is There Cause For Concern Over BP's 6.6% Dividend? [View article]
Somewhat surprised, but pretty close to BP's argued $12M max. To my knowledge first ruling in BP's favor by Barbiere.

  • Is There Cause For Concern Over BP's 6.6% Dividend? [View article]
My best guess is that BP management will do everything it can to avoid reducing the dividend. Stating the obvious, the key here is oil prices. If they recover even by 25 percent the dividend is safe. If they stay below $50 all bets are off, and dividends of almost all oil companies will be affected. In any event with maximum Clean Water fine soon to be levied, and claims still poring in, BP will have its hands full maintaining its dividend unless prices recover soon. Dividend increases are unlikely for some time.

The penalty will be the max. If Barbiere and his local cronies could impose more they would.
