Interesting angle on the Microsoft-Yahoo merger, Tom. Most people don't realize it, but image search is a significant share of overall searches carried out on the Internet. And if you do a comparison at a site like Zuula (zuula.com) of the results generated by the different image search engines, it's pretty amazing how different the results can be.

That said, I'm not sure that image search is such a key motivator of Microsoft's bid for Yahoo. If it wanted to, there is nothing standing in the way of Microsoft including Flickr results in its image search results right now. (Google could do the same, as well, if it wanted.) And there are plenty of small companies out there doing interesting, advanced stuff in the image search arena.

Would Microsoft's image search capabilities and offerings benefit from a Yahoo acquisition? No question. Is this a key motivator for the Yahoo offer? I don't think so.
