    Churchill was a journalist at the time. He was detained by the Boers and "escaped" - his words. He wrote that during the escape he swam across the "mighty Apies River." The Apies River will make your local creek look like the Amazon by comparison. I doubt whether Churchill got his feet wet. Journalists seldom tell the truth and more so when they write about themselves. Other than that, Churchill was a great man (English father and American mother), but in his youth, he embelished the truth somewhat.
