  • How Much of China's Export Industry Is Owned by U.S. Corporations? [View article]
"It also explains why the idea of "bashing" China for the current account deficit is pointless, as is the debate of the value of the Yuan. All China provided was an environment where free markets and free enterprise could prosper, Yankee know how and ingenuity did the rest. There is no reason why America can't do that, but "Stimulus Packages" and intrusive government, won't achieve it."

Thank you. Very important points that need to be kept in mind by those who agnonize about trade deficits and call for protectionism. We are slouching towards socialism. China is marching towards capitalism, however slowly. Our ingenuity is being crushed by the neocons' trillion dollar foreign entaglements:

  • Why Economic Stagnation Will Continue [View article]
Half the trade deficit can be accounted for by multinationals intra-firm trade (Marc Chandler on Seeking Alpha). The trade deficit is a raw number. A US company importing goods manufactured by its own facilities abroad adds to the trade deficit, but in the process lowers its cost of production/sales and improves its profit margin, etc.

  • The 'Ore' Wars [View article]
"Towards the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, there were the Boer Wars, an attempt by Britain to expand it imperialist empire. If there was any good to those wars, it was that a young lieutenant by the name of Winston Churchill made it through alive"

Churchill was a journalist at the time. He was detained by the Boers and "escaped" - his words. He wrote that during the escape he swam across the "mighty Apies River." The Apies River will make your local creek look like the Amazon by comparison. I doubt whether Churchill got his feet wet. Journalists seldom tell the truth and more so when they write about themselves. Other than that, Churchill was a great man (English father and American mother), but in his youth, he embelished the truth somewhat.

  • What if the Chinese Sell Treasuries? [View article]
Are you assuming China hold $2 trillion in dollar assets? I thought they held about $700 billion? If so, does that change your analysis? If the dollar depreciates sharply as some predict, will the euro and other major currencies appreciate?

The Wall Street Journal has become a tool of the neocons. Pretty soon it will be integrated with FOX News. Read the Financial Mail and the Economist for independent objective reporting.

Alex, tell us what is the export component of China's GDP? How does that number support your assertion. Thanks.

Arkay's first response was helpful and a catalyst for an insightful debate. The next two postings were superfluous and mean-spirited. They scuttled the chance of any meaningful discourse.
