      Dividend Yields Soar
Unfortunately the highest yielding stock lists these days contain stocks with a higher risk of cutting their payment. In this difficult environment, no one could tell you if any financial company will keep its dividend payment stable. Maybe that's why dividend investors need to be diversified across many sectors and not chase yield blindly.
I really hope ACAS could keep paying its rich dividend. But as the stock goes lower it seems to me that raising capital through share offers will be pretty expensive in the future..

      Investing in Dividend Paying Companies
Interesting analysis. You might also reference one of Jeremy Siegel's research papers where he found out that buying the orginial 500 stocks of the S&P 500 back in 1957 and then doing absolutely nothing for 50 years would have also outperformed the S&P 500 index by 1 percentage point!

Is Wachovia Planning to Eliminate Its Dividend?
Unfortunatley most financials will have cut their dividends by the end of the current financial crisis. Even if a dividend payer has been rewarding shareholders with increasing payments for over 25 years they could still cut.
That's why one needs to be diversified.

      AT&T - Dividend Analysis
      Dividend Cop,

You are correct that the ATT that I am analyzing is the former SBC. The main source that I used was morningstar.

Optical amplifier - my data sources do not confirm a reverse split in 2002. Where are you getting this data from?

Washaway, I did compate my data source to VL, and yes there are differences. I also compared Google finance for the EPS, and it is different than Value Line. Could you please post a link to Value Line's data?

Why Timber Outperforms Stocks, Bonds and Even Commodities
My take on timber is that the outperformace over the past 3 decades might lead to underperformance for the next 1-2 decades. I would be interested in seeing total return performance of timber for at least the past 100 years. 30 years is just an average tree's lifespand ( isn't it)?

Besides, looking at this chart of lumber prices since 1974, it seems that the price is pretty volatile. And the move from 150 in 1973 to 250 in 2007 is equal to 1.5% increase annually.

It does seem to me that you are placing the increase in market price and the increase in inflation together. How exactly does inflation add to your returns?

      Timber ETFs...Without the Timber?
If you want to gain exposure to timber go with PCL and RYN if you can't afford to buy the actual forest.

      Top 15 Dividend Paying REITs
Those are some pretty good stocks out there for which I have never heard anything yet.

      stc1,

Nobody would take your comments seriously unless you provide some hard data evidence that David Powell's calculation data is wrong. You might be correct, but please next time you criticize something, please have your backup ready.

      Guliamo,

What you are saying about RYN is generally correct. It doesn't have to chop down trees if it doesn't like the price. But how else is the company going to be able to generate the cashflow to pay dividends to shareholders?

The Pros, Cons and Paradoxes of Dividends
I guess companies like JNJ, PG, USB, WMT, UTX, MMM and many more are examples of situations where recurring dividend payment "reduces a company’s ability to invest opportunistically. ".

Dividends are a tangible thing that investors actually receive in the mail. Regular Dividend payments pressure management to be super careful when managing cashflow and doesn't stimulate them to do something stupid like investing in sand castles. Share buybacks are a good thing in my opinion. The major problem with buybacks is that stock market prices fluctuate; thus if a company buys back 5% of its stock, the probability of the stock price increasing by 5% overnight is not very high..

I am a big fan of dividends, since they allow investors to simply purchase a basket of stocks and reinvest the dividends, which allows for a pretty nice compounding of capital. If your dividend payers like to grow their dividends as well, then I guess you get an even better compounding potential.

And yes, compounding is one of the 8 wonders of the world, isn't it?

      The Problem With Designer ETFs
Interesting article. You might think that these ETF's mostly based off of a backtested index are just full of hot air. I do think, however that over the long-term companies that could increase their dividends consistently over time will do at least as well as the stock market averages.

Tyler, the old saying says" When they are crying, you should be buying. When they are yelling, you should be selling".
I love it when every dividend investor on the planet throws in the towel and capitulates. That will be a great day for bargain hunters..
