  • GE's Jeff Immelt: 'The Age Of Natural Gas Is Upon Us' [View article]
Mike, great points on how dirty and dangerous coal is. The reason we can't even eat large fish from the ocean is because of all the mercury emitted by coal into the air that winds up in the ocean and is injested by plankton, the main source of food for fish. Here's a scary fact that was realized due to China's air pollution: 10% of all that thick coal fog is winding up at the west coast of the USA due to easterly winds bringing it here all the way from China.

You have to wonder what kind of health issues the Chinese will have due to all the coal burning that is going on there. Mercury is not good for the brain so the Chinese could become a race of zombies in twenty years.

When I first began investing on my own in 2004, I opened a large position on GE to act as an anchor in my portfolio. At the time, the markets were doing well, but GE was not. It did not have a great yield either, so the dividend was not that great. I sold this company about a year later, wondering how such a "great" company could be so mediocre for investors. I still would not buy GE today because it seems no better now for investment purposes than it was ten years ago. A better company that is similar to go with is United Technologies (UTX, which I owned but sold) or Lockheed Martin (LMT) which I do not own either. These companies are much more shareholder friendly when it comes to dividends and growth. You can throw Boeing (BA) into the mix too.

I just don't understand how so many people could have purchased a fictional currency like bitcoin. I had read recently about tech geeks who were setting up computers to buy bitcoins on dips and were basically all in with their entire savings to build up a massive collection of bitcoins. I wonder how they could have been so smart with their tech know how to create such a system and yet so stupid to believe that this get rich quick currency was going to keep going higher. PT Barnum once said "There's a sucker born every minute". Toss in thousands of new suckers who bought into the bitcoin fraud.

Bitcoin is toast, but you can # that some schemer is about to come up with a replacement that creates a whole new group of suckers after the dust from the bitcoin crash clears. Some people just don't get it when it comes to scams, but it is almost comical to watch the fervor, as the ball starts rolling and people throw their life savings into the latest "get rich quick" disaster. Someone is laughing tonight as they count all the cash they ripped off from the bitcoin crowd. How sad.

  • Seadrill: Short-Term Troubles, Long-Term Growth [View article]
(SDRL) is headed lower still. With so much oil flowing in the USA domestically, the need for deep sea drillers has fallen. Rigs are expensive. The daily rate is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and that is now making companies like (DO) (RIG) and (SDRL) expendable. Move your cash into a good domestic oil like Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD), EOG Resources (EOG) Continental Resources (CLR) or any one of the domestics that are going to be producing oil/natgas without all the risk of a deep water disaster or the high cost of drilling in deep water.
Also, as the price of Seadrill goes lower, the yield goes higher and makes this stock a high risk play. The dividend is at risk to go lower.

Fortunately, anyone here who posts regularly on SA knows that # was doomed and not worth getting involved in. We all realize that getting involved in a fake currency is for fools and making money involves using one's gray matter. Sadly, a lot of people will lose their shirts for buying these worthless bitcoins. It reminds me of another big get rich quick scheme from the 25 years ago, known as the circle of gold and once the last sucker bought into it, poof! they lost their hard earned money. This was similar to that scam, a pyramid gone bad.

  • How Do I Know When To Sell A Stock? [View article]
Most of the good equities are topped out. The big "If" is Europe as I see it. If Europe ever gets out of the doldrums, our markets should be good to continue the march higher, but that's a big "If" right now. China looks like a crash and burn sometime in the next year or two and that could take the markets down.

  • American Railcar: Why This Cheap Manufacturing Stock Is Shooting Higher [View article]
Well, I was wrong back in November about ARII and the tank car makers. With all the cars that need to be replaced, these companies will be working full time to builld a whole new fleet of tankers to carry all that oil and LNG out of oil country.
